Glenn Martin type TA & TT

In 1913 the PVA ((ProefVliegAfdeeling = Test Flight Department) of the KNIL (Royal Netherlands-Indies Army) was founded. After a couple less successful tests with different aircraft, two Martin TA (Tractor Army) were ordered in may 1915 at the Glenn L . Martin Company. The first one was delivered in June 1915 and was registered with the serial-number TA-1. Only the digit 1 was painted on the tailwing. In November 1915 Lt.Flyer Henk Ter Poorten made the first flight with the TA-1 from Tandjong Priok to Rawah Penganongan on Java. The Martin TA was equipped with the Hall-Scott Type 5-A5 engine with 100 HP. The engine was to slow to fly with two persons and was later replaced by the 140HP engine.
With the succes of the TA-1 planes the PVA was dissolved and replaced by the founding of the LA (Luchtafdeling-Air department ) of the KNIL. Here is the photograph from that first flight and the profile I made of it.

Due to the foundation of the LA (Luchtafdeling - Air Department) of the ML-KNIL in Dutch East Indies there was a need for training pilots. That is why Type TT aircraft were ordered from Martin and were delivered in March 1917. Again, it appeared that not all Hall-Scott engines were satisfactory. The last two delivered TT training aircraft (TT-5 and TT-6) were more satisfactory and the training of pilots was started at Kalidjati on Java in the Dutch East Indies. Later, all TTs were fenced into land planes. Here is the profile of the TT-6 with floats from 1917. Also here with the orange roundel and a small number six on the hull.
