Title: I.A.R. 80
Post by: No.1 on March 29, 2011, 10:42:21 AM
This is one of the greatest fighter development from my point of view. Romanian experts get very smart decision to make conversion from the hight wing, fixed gear PZL.24 and convert it into the sleek designed fighter plane. They develop it into the I.A.R.80 which adopted whole production tooling and equipment. It use the same radial engine as PZL fighter which is licensed and manufactured in Romania and in regard to its small power (compared with other constructions), this fighter give great performance and managed to get in fight with far better fighters. Its great improvement is the frame less cockpit canopy, maybe very first in the world used on the series production fighter aircraft.

So lets go with profile of this machine  :-tri

Another great subject!
I once knew a gentleman (now deceased) who was in one of the B-24s that flew the Tidal Wave mission. He still remembered the "radial engine fighter" quite vividly sixty years later as he and an I.A.R. were shooting at each other.

Just like our IK-fighters, simply forgotten in the mainstream of all those Mustangs, 109s and 190s...
