Title: Curtiss SBC Helldiver
Post by: No.1 on May 18, 2014, 09:01:01 PM
Just start this, very interesting machine and if I am correct it have great influence in creation of German dive bomber. I have just start work on art and this time I show the basic drawings as start point.

Udet was very impressed by the concept of dive bombing as practiced in the U.S. in the thirties. The Curtiss would definitely seem to be the "father" of the Stuka theory.

Who could guess this plane would have such influence ;) And from my side- all shapes are completed and now start work on other elements, first to see is cockpit and the hinge line behind gunner on fuselage.

Coming along nicely! You've captured the airplane perfectly.

One thing about this machine I always find peculiar--putting that big 1820 engine on this airframe has always given the nose an oversized look that doesn't quite fit the fuselage. Same thing with the Wright-powered Hawk 75 and a few other Curtiss products.

In fact the Helldiver was one of the last of its biplane kind! You can already more or less recognize the tail of the WW II Helldiver!
You can also state that the Helldiver biplane just had one wing too much!
As you know the Grumman F4F Hellcat started originally as a biplane as F4F-1!
Monoplane version became the F4F-2!

Thanks for comments and you are right, this is very interesting aircraft in its structure. I work on tiny details and there is just few hours left until complete.

Thank you :)) Here you are almost completed, need some 15 minutes to complete layout and then to do one color profile. Very complex machine to do!!!!

I like this later paint scheme--the Marines kept flying these quite a while, into 1943!

They have been painted in the USA but wore French paints.

I've always wanted to build one of the French airplanes, a really attractive idea to me.....especially after seeing a photo of the "homeless" aircraft sitting on Martinique.
