Brunno:

You have it right the SSW is a replica.

Did the germans ever wing out the cooling problems with SH engines?

No. 1

What great fotos and videos!!!!!  I really enjoy things about the Italian armed forces.  I think that they got a bad rap in WW II.

The US did not produce many planes for use in WWI.  One that they planned to build was the Caproni bomber to be pwered by the V 12 Liberty motors of 400 HP each.  I don't know if any ever reached the front.  We did build some DH 4's, again with the 400HP Liberty.  Another Liberty development was a 300 HP V8 which would have equipped American built SE5's.  In any event the v8 was a bust and the proposed producton never materialized.  The Brits have always claimed that the DH4's equipped with the 375 HP Rolls Royce Eagle was superior to the US built machine.

Thank you for the fotos and the informaton.  I think it was sort of a "Rube Goldberg" arragement.  With a top speed of 360 KPh (225 MPH) and its size, I can see why it never got beyond the experimental stage.  I assume from the pictures that thi ship still exists.  Is it in a museum?

Nico:

Thanks for the reply, but the Caproni Campini was the crate I had in mind.

There were two versions of "Dawn Patrol" with Errol Flynn.  I think the Brit planes were actually French and the Germans were a Pfalz DXII and a variety of American biplanes tarted up to look like Jerries.   Also Howar hughes made "Hells Angels".  If I remember correctly they had a Zpp (model) in that one.

Did anyboy see "The Blue Max".  They had a collection of homemades, Tiger Moths and a French monoplane.  I thought it was a good flick.

I remember seeing pictures of and reading short articles on an Italian Jet.  It was a two place monoplane with one engine.  Was it built by Caproni?  Does anyone have pactures or info?  I don't believe it ever obtained combat status.

Did the Meteor ever run into the 262 or Arado?  How did they stack up?

The B25 is a very famous airplane in Western Pennsylvania.  One crashed into the Monongahela River here, I think in 1952.  Although the river in the spot where it went down is less that 20 feet deep.  The airplane was never found.  Rumors speculate that the government removed it from the water.  There is no credible confirmation of that story, but one would think that aplane of that size and weight would have been easily found.

Good stuff!  I saw a site earlier today wich claimed the CW 21 could outclimb the Zero and Oscar as well as fly faster.
I don't think that was true.

In the thread about the Brewster Buffalo, the Curtis Interceptor and P36 were mentioned as being used by the Dutch Airforce against the Japanese.  There is some information concerning the 36; it was a front line fighter for the US briefly and was used by the French against the Luftwaffe in 1939-40.  The Curtis Interceptor was refused by the US Army Aircorps, but was sold to the Dutch in some numbers.  Does anyone have any info or pictures?

The Buffalo was the first monoplane carrier fighter of the US Navy.  It was actually and deliberately built stronger and heavier than it needed to be.  The result was a decided reduction in performance.  I wonder which Japanese fighterd the Dutch were fighting in their one to one kill ratio.  The Japanese were using Mitsubishi and Nakajima fgihters with fixed landing gear and twin 7.7 cal machine guns.  I don't believe they would have come anywhere near thet against either Zeroes or Hyabusas.

The Finns had great success with the Buffalo, but here again, what were the Russians sending against them?

Count Caproni was responsible for some pretty awesome bombers during WW I.  I ubderstand that there were some preliminary plans to  build some of those planes in the US powered by Liberty v-12 motors.  How many, if any, were built I don't know.

This thread is very interesting.

Thank you so very much for the links on Italian paratroopers.  I have alwaus wondered why the Italians have gotten such a bad rap in both WW I and WWII.
