New bomber project...  :-wave

No.1 Which Mark are you doing?

A word of caution on Wellingtons, be careful with the side windows on the fuselage, some had no windows, others had a parallelogram type of shape. I've seen different window configurations on the same production version, it can get confusing. Archival sources for the squadron you are painting it is is critical.

Lets start with Spanish civil war sample...

Hi No.1,

I saw your Fury profiles in this month's aircraft modelling magazine, they reproduce very nicely in print, excellent work. I scanned a few other modeling magazines at the book store and your profiles were the best of the lot by far in my opinion.

Well done!

Yeah, F-84 Thunderstreak. My father saw one crash in the Korean War, can you do a USAF model from 1952 No.1??

Warplane Art / Re: Fairey Gannet
« on: June 12, 2009, 03:31:21 AM »
The Fairey Gannet was a British carrier-borne anti-submarine warfare and airborne early warning aircraft of the post-Second World War era developed for the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm by the Fairey Aviation Company. It is a mid-wing monoplane with a tricycle undercarriage and a crew of three, and double turboprop engine driving two contra-rotating propellers.

The Federal Republic of Germany bought 15 Gannet AS.4 and one T.5 in 1958. They operated as the anti-submarine squadron of Marinefliegergeschwader 2 (2nd Naval Fighter Wing) from Sylt. In 1963 the squadron was re-assigned to MFG 3 at Nordhorn until the Gannets were replaced by the Breguet Br.1150 Atlantique in 1966. During its operations the German Navy lost only one AS.4 on 12 May 1966, when a plane crashed shortly after take-off from Kaufbeuren, killing all three crew members.

In FAA service, the Gannet generally wore the standard camouflage scheme of a Sky (duck-egg blue) underside and fuselage sides, with Extra Dark Sea Grey upper surfaces, the fuselage demarcation line running from the nose behind the propeller spinner in a straight line to then curve and join the line of the fin. Code numbers are typically painted on the side of the fuselage ahead of the wing; roundel and serial markings were behind the wing.

Gannet AS Mark 1

    Three-seat anti-submarine version (180 aircraft were built).
Gannet T Mark 2
Training version of the Gannet AS 1. The Gannet T 2 trainer entering service in 1955 (35 aircraft were built).
Gannet AEW Mark 3
Airborne early warning aircraft for the Royal Navy. The Gannet AEW.3 entering service in 1958/1959 (44 aircraft were built).
Gannet AS Mark 4
Three-seat anti-submarine version, with improved performance from a more powerful engine (82 aircraft were built).
Gannet COD Mark 4
AS.4 Gannets modified to operate as cargo/passenger transport aircraft.
Gannet T Mark 5
Training version of the Gannet AS.4 trainer (eight aircraft were built).
Gannet AS Mark 6
Small number of Gannet AS.4s fitted with new radar and electronics.
Gannet ECM Mark 6
Electronic countermeasures version, operating from shore bases.

Not much ground clearance on that Royal Navy marked Gannet in the photo. I think this plane had counter reciprocating props also did it not?

Nonetheless, I think its a kewl plane.

Okay, so I have was able to add the missing parts to my mask and have taken it a couple of steps farther. I decided to do the 109E in the photo from my last post.

I've been using a lot of layers for various areas of the plane and discovered the magnetic lasso tool which has worked well for me.

Here is where I am at now, so the next question I have to the experts in this forum is, am I on the right track?  My plan is to finish the paint scheme and then add the decals, what do you think?

Hi No.1!

I am trying to remember an instance where I have used the Pen tool and cannot think of one, so I guess I don't know how to use. Definately don't know how to use it in place of the magic wand.

I am debating whether I should do the 109 in the markings that you have in the tutorial or if I should do it in the colours of Ed Russell's 109E which is only a few kms from my house. I am wondering whether I would learn more replicating what you have done or modifying it, any thoughts?

Hi All!

I have been working on the tutorial 109 off and on for about a year. Every time I start to get close to understanding what I am doing I end up getting busy with work or family and go months without touching it, then I have to start over.

There are a few problems that I have each time and I thought i would bring them here.

My first question is, when I use the magic wand to select the aircraft, I have 2 areas that for some reason do not get included, a section on the underside of the engine and the tire. What do I need to do to get them included with the rest of the mask?

I am determined to finish it this time so I am grateful for any help.

I love it! Here is the B-25 from the Canadian Warplane Heritage, I took the photo last March. I've been lucky enough to see it fly quite often as well as the Lanc.

To regret i did not ever think about them but i have looking for the very detailed plans. Do you want to make some of this famous planes?

I have done some profiles by hand using markers, the only poblem is when I scan them into digital they lose a lot of detail. I am still working my way through the tutorial here on this site (and learning Photoshop at the same time) but my hope is to make my own profiles of Lancs, Halifaxes, Wellingtons, Stirlings, Hampdens, Whitleys etc.

I just wondered if anyone else had tried it.

Lots of lovely fighters done in here, I am wondering if anyone has tried RAF Bombers
from WW2? Say a Halifax or Lanc?
