Warplane Art / Curtiss H-12A Flying Boat

In June 1918 during the First World War, there was a confrontation between English and German seaplanes in the Wadden Islands, including Felixstowes. But a Curtiss plane from the English RNAS was also involved and made an emergency landing at sea on June 4, 1918 after a hit. Went ashore at Vlieland but, before it could be set on fire by the crew, it was confiscated by Dutch soldiers on the spot. The chest was interned and formally purchased at the end of 1918. This Curtiss was a H-12A and had a 350 hp Rolls Royce Eagle VIII engine. It belonged to the RNAS and had the serial number 8689. Several Curtiss H-12's were modified with a Felixstowe F.2A Hull, the 8689 had originally fins, as shown in the detail.
It went on service with the MLD with the number L-2.

After an attack on a German Zeppelin, this aircraft had to make an emergency landing at Borkum on 26 September 1917. It was interned and transferred to the MVK De Mok, where it was provided with an orange roundel and the registration K-1. It was used by MLD. It had a Sunbeam 260 HP engine. The plane hardly flew and was taken off in 1920.

Due to the need for flying boats at the MLD Fokker tried to manufacture its own flying boat. It became the Fokker B.I, partly made of aluminum, linen and wood. The B.I was intended for the Dutch East Indies. In 1922 it made its test run and was then shipped to Indie. It was not waterproof and was not very fast. Ultimately, the MLD chose the Dornier Wal. Here is my profile of the only B.I, who got the registration number of FB-1A in the Indies.

« on: June 08, 2020, 06:38:05 PM »We all know that the He 111 started its life disguised as a passenger plane for the Deutsche Lufthansa DLH. In reality they were spy planes fitted with camera's and flown by Luftwaffe pilots wearing DLH uniforms. In spite of this, a small batch of He 111 was supplied for just commercial flying. DLH flew these planes for a short period only since they proved to be uneconomical.Nice story about the He 111 "civilian"
This He 111 variant was fitted with radial air-cooled engines and also visited in the late thirties Schiphol airport. They were soon taken over by the Luftwaffe as transport and liaison/training aircraft.
