Yugoslavia purchased its first batch of MiG-21s in 1962 from the Soviet Union. In the period from 1962 to the early 1980s Yugoslavia had purchased up to 216 MiG-21s in nine variants. From 1964 to 1992, about 80 aircraft had been lost in accidents. Yugoslav Air force units that operated MiG-21 were the 204th fighter-aviation regiment at Batajnica Air Base (126th, 127th and 128th fighter-aviation squadrons), 117th fighter-aviation regiment at Željava Air Base (124th and 125th fighter-aviation squadron and 352nd recon squadron), 83rd fighter-aviation regiment at Slatina Air Base (123rd and 130th fighter aviation squadron), 185th fighter-bomber-aviation squadron (129th fighter-aviation squadron) at Pula and 129th training center at Batajnica air base.

My next project! :-jump
Decals should arrive this days. :-jump
Maybe tomorrow i will start build this machine. :-ok
-
Kit look simple for me. Hope that parts are match good together.
-
I heard that this is the best model of MiG-21Bis. ;)
-
Good! Now it is on you mate :-ok
-
This will be great :) this is one of the best 1:72 kits ever.
-
Well...I am impressed by the amount of detail in the cockpit. This is a really good model! :-ok
Fasten your seatbelts, here we go... :)) :-ok Cockpit! ;)
-
Well done, Sall!
If I can give you a tip: try to remove the ejection marks, that will upgrade your excellent work...
-
Thanks mate.Your support means a lot to me. :-ok
I corrected the cockpit. I realized this mistake, but I have not had time to correct it, because I must go out to meet with my friends. :) It is now corrected! :-ok
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Excellent, Sall!
-
Nice and precise work so far, keep on it!! :-clap
-
Very nice work!
Scott
-
Thanks friends! :-flo
-
Very good... such tiny detail..
-
:-flo
-
the cockpit looks great.I can't wait to see the painting.
-
Thanks bro :-flo
And i can not wait to continue my work, but it will be next week, because my obligations at school. :(
-
Very Nice Indeed! :-ok
-
Thanks tenk! :-flo :-obey
-
I like it, nice work Sall :-ok
-
If anyone has pictures of KM-1 seats for the MiG-21,i would ask you to post here.It can be images resin seat, and photos right seat, just to be nice to see.Thank you in advance! :-flo

Here you are a great web page with reference photos and information on many types of ejection seats.
http://www.seatejectcolor.com/seat/
and here is the KM-1M
http://www.seatejectcolor.com/seat/sedili/ditte/severin/km1.htm
-
Just be aware of a certain thing. Our mig-21's had black and leather colored head rests.
-
Thank you friends. All pictures are welcome, and will be of great help to me! :-flo :-flo :-flo
-
Hi guys! :-ok
I worked a little on the seat.I am pleased that so far turned out, although the pictures show the complete opposite (the pictures are ugly) - I just wanted to show progress.Tomorrow i will add a belts, the ejection handle and paint it.We will see how it will look when finished. :-ok :-roll
Pictures show what it was like "before" and "after". :-razz
-
:-ok :-clap
-
Hi mates! :-wave
Seat is finally over.
I think it turned out much better than a seat that comes in a box.The truth is that i just not hit a right shade of blue, but next time will be better.
I lost lot of nerves much by doing this seat, and several times it could fly out the window,but...
I have no power to find the right shade of blue. That would be disastrous for me and for the seat.
-
NIce seat :) next time try to make the seat belts out of tamiya or some other masking tape instead of styrene :)
-
Thank you mate.I will listen your advice, next time. :-flo
-
Excellent, Sall!
-
Nice try and from closed cockpit would look fine ;)
-
Thanks mates! :-flo
-
I started assembly. :-tri
Going slowly, but for now is ok... :-ok
These are pictures from the day before yesterday, now I throw back to work, and the afternoon will be the new pictures. :-tri :-flo
-
You better wait untill the finnal asembly of the parts before you paint the dielectrics in order to paint them.THe nosecone is green and the unpainted part is metallic or some silver or something similar.
-
"Unpainted" part was painted is grey, precisely Hu 127.I painted it in that color, just that would be not left with no color, and that part is not seen so much when model be assembled. :-roll
Now i'm paint it in silver and thank you for your advice. :-flo :-flo
-
Belive me it will be seen :) it looks 10x times better painted like this :) great job.
-
I share your opinion that now it looks much, much better! :)) :-ok
Once again, thank you for correction! :-flo
-
No problem. If there is anything else just ask :) I like your cokpit. It looks busy enough. This zvezda mig-21 is one of the best kits I have ever built.
-
Thanks for comment for cockpit. :-flo
I also really like the model. It is very detailed. :-ok ;)
-
:))
Both sides of the fuselage are joined.Assemble is great, almost no need for puttying. :-tri :-jump :-jump
Now (these days) will look for some good pictures of box of landing gear.I will try to improve the box in my model, and try to "wired" them. :)) It will be my first try in that job.We will see how it look in the end. :-tri :-flo :))
-
One question...
Which material do i use to make stabilizers on the antenna?
(http://walkarounds.airforce.ru/photogallery/photo00022555/ak_mig-21bis_005.jpg) (http://walkarounds.airforce.ru/avia/rus/mig/mig-21bis/ak_mig-21bis_005.jpg)
-
Sall, you might be able to use .005 sheet styrene for those vanes. I've used it for similar items over the years with good results.
Keep up the good work on this project!
-
If you don't have styrene at your disposal you can always use beer or coca cola can :) just cut the can and flaten it down.It suits this purpose very well.
-
Thanks friends! :-flo :-flo :-flo
-
Bravo Sall :-jump :-jump :-jump just go on, man :-tri :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-wave
-
Thank you Letipapa! :-flo
-
strike hard, strike sure! :-ok nice one :))
-
Thank you tenk! :-flo
I'm waiting to arrive me yellow zinc chromate, then i will continue work - enrichment box of landing gear! :-jump
-
I finally found some time to work on this plane. :-tri :-tri
I started with enrichment the box of landing gear, and so far i have done just left.
The pictures are bad, because everything is very, very small, and there are many more details than can be seen, but it is impossible to take pictures with the camera. :(
I like how it turned out so far. :-flo :))

Excellent Sall :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap I think we all can be proud of your quick improvement. :-flo :-wave
-
Thank you mate.Your words mean me a lot! :-flo
-
True :) We all who are active here have pleasure to see our young man how he become more skilled modeler every day ;)
-
:-red :-red :-obey :-obey

Great details :) I can't wait to see more.
-
Really good progress you're making there, Sall!! :-ok

Thank you all guys.Yours words mean me a looooooot!!! :)) :-jump :-red :-red :-flo :-flo :-flo :-flo
Well...Here you are reference photos of left upper side:

Now my work: :-ok
-
I must say that there will be more details, when i set a hydraulic tube for closing door box of landing gear, details like cables ,who are on the reference photos painted gray. :-ok
:-wave
Ps.These days i will continue work on front box of landing gear! :-ok :-tri
-
Well done, and a nice touch to show the 1/1 photo as reference for us.
-
Very good work on this so small space inside!
-
It is very, very small space. Simply, some things are too small, so it is stupid at all try to make them.I think the 1/72 scale very ungrateful for detailing. It seems to me that it is much easier to work at 1/48.But I love 1/72! :-love :-love :-jump
-
Yes it is very hard to make some small things in 1/72, but to make few of them to enrich the model is good, and I believe there is big joy when one succeeds. Just go on Sall, you are doing a great job. Banzaiiiii! :-ok :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-wave
-
Thank you friends! :-flo
Letipapa, you are absolutely right! :-ok :-flo
-
nice detailing mate...
-
Thank you Samuraj! :-flo :-flo :-wave
Well,i continued work on this plane.
I finished enrichment the front box landing gear.

My work(photos are bad, becouse everything is so tiny):
-
:-ok
-
Very good mate ;)
-
Thank you guys! :-flo
Later,i started with assembly process... :-ok
There was little filling and sanding job,i must to rescribe lost panels, but assembly is pretty good! :-jump
Then i fill marks of casting, and paint extension box of landing gear. This days i will continue work on enrichment this extension...
That's all for now... :)) :-wave
-
Must say that you have much better work skill :-clap
-
Thank you buddy. ;) :-flo
I must admit that i hate filling and sanding job,but it is a very important part of the build, perhaps most important. For this reason i try to do that part of job the best i can, even though i hate him. :-kr
-
I like it a lot :)
-
I'm glad to hear that master of MiG-21 like my work! :-ok :-flo
-
I am no master by any means :) I am just a simple and avarege modeller. :)
-
Well, you know this kit much better then anyone... ;)
-
I would suggest you fill the join between the fuselage and the windshield becouse if you don't it will look silly. This is my suggestion for you. Also there is the join point at the airbrakes wich is on of the worst parts of the kit.
-
Ok,i will fix those points. :-ok Thanks for suggestion. :-ok :-flo
-
I found some time to work on this model. :-jump
I continue with enrichment extension box of landing gear. :-tri :-flo
Here you are reference photos:
(http://www.primeportal.net/hangar/images/bill_spidle/mig-21_us_thumbs/MiG-21US_N1121M_026t.jpg) (http://data.primeportal.net/hangar/bill_spidle/mig-21_us/MiG-21US_N1121M_026.jpg) (http://www.primeportal.net/hangar/images/bill_spidle/mig-21_us_thumbs/MiG-21US_N1121M_097t.jpg) (http://data.primeportal.net/hangar/bill_spidle/mig-21_us/MiG-21US_N1121M_097.jpg) (http://www.primeportal.net/hangar/images/bill_spidle/mig-21_us_thumbs/MiG-21US_N1121M_101t.jpg) (http://data.primeportal.net/hangar/bill_spidle/mig-21_us/MiG-21US_N1121M_101.jpg)
I added(i don't know name of this part in cockpit...),and repaired parts on which Dragan pay me attention, sector in front of windshield and air brake. :-ok
-
Looks great.NOw jsut add a gunsight and a little drybrushing and the cockpit is finished :)
-
Well,i made some progress... :-jump
I added the vertical part of the tail, and some other small details. :-paper
Next is to do enrichment leg of landing gear...
:-wave
-
Good!!!
-
very nice my friend! :-ok
-
Thanks friends! :-flo
-
Great
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Thanks! :-flo
-
Very nice indeed!
-
Thank you Paul! :-flo
-
The effort and enthusiasm you put in is marvelous, and it shows on your model just right :-ok
-
Thanks mate! :-red :-red :-obey :-obey :-flo
-
I had few minutes of free time today, and decided to make some progress. It is little, little step, but it is step... :))
I made gunsight in cockpit. :-ok
Tomorrow I will try to make this console, which is rounded in the picture! :-roll
-
Nice try mate :-ok
-
Continued progress! :-love
-
That rounded instrument panel is not present on the Yugoslav migs. This I think is a part of the R version.
-
That rounded instrument panel is not present on the Yugoslav migs. This I think is a part of the R version.
Huuhhh... never get in that deep details but this is good point that every detail have to be double check out
-
Photo is shot in Poland MiG-21Bis.If you are right,i will not make that console.
-
I think that console is for reconnaissance equipment.
-
Ok.Thanks for info, and for saving my time... :-flo
-
Hi mates! :-wave :-salut
Yesterday I was little focus on this beautiful hobby! ;)
I added stabilizer on the antenna, and added little wires on leg of landing gear...
Tomorrow (or today),i will continue progress! :-jump
:-salut
-
Oooooooooooooo- you fight with so tiny details!!!
-
Well...Stabilizers i just had to make, because it is detail that means a lot,and eye-catching when it would not be... :-flo
Enrichment leg of landing gear i did for my soul!I think it looks nicer than the OOB. :-flo
-
For the pitot tube winglets that measure the angle of attack and slide you could use a beer/coca cola can foil.Just cut it carefully and you can make such detail parts that look 10x better than ones made from plastic :)
-
It is not made of plastic, than metal on the lighter... Which is little thicker than can of coke or beer, but it is easier
to shape!
-
Hola amigos! :-wave
I made some progress yesterday and today.I made 2xR-60 missile, from zero. :-jump :-tri I use can foil and a toothpick. Now i have a total 4xR-60 missile and 2xK-13. :-flo Tomorrow,if i find time i will try to make a double carrier rocket for the MiG-21.I like how they look(my R-60). :-jump
During this week i do the painting of aircraft air brush-my first in my life,i hope it will turn out ok. :-tri
Picture is shot and update from my mobile phone,so it isn't in the best quality.Sorry! :-flo Tomorrow i will update some better! :-flo
-
Excellent work with foil and toothpicks!!!
And good luck with your airbrush. Once used, it's very difficult to come back to paintbrush...
-
Thank you Daniel! :-flo
I hope that everything will be smooth! :-flo
-
Nothing new, just better photo of missiles... :-ok
-
Hi guys... :))
Here i am... :-jump :-jump :-tri
As you know,i made 2xR-60.With 2 more that i got in kit,it's a total of 4xR-60 missiles. :-cool
For so many missiles,i need a double carrier, which i made today. :-ok :-wise
I found some pictures on the internet, and on that basis i made my two double carrier missiles. :-flo :-ok
-
Very nice and fine work, Sall!!!
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Thanks guys :-flo :-flo
I think that tomorrow will be more progress ;) :-tri
-
I like this adaptation, nice idea :-ok
-
Nice addition and scratchbuild :-ok
-
Thank you friends. :-flo :-flo
Today i wasn't unable to continue work on models, because on the pool organized sports day, where they come from the pupils of my school. It was nice, nice event, which organize every year 2 times.Otherwise,i'm up to 2 years ago trained swimming, but the lack of time i stopped.I trained for 8 years.I do hope that the faculty have more time, and i'll start again with the training.
As modeling is concerned, the most interesting part for me is scratchbuild.I really enjoy this part of the model. Although perhaps not always drop perfectly,i am glad to somehow get rich model. So i brought her a part of myself, and looks nicer models, for example rich when the landing gear box,or instead of the 2 rockets, paragraph 4... ;)
Of course, this is my subjective opinion, and do not necessarily coincide with yours. However, the world would be very boring place if everyone thought in the same way! ;)
-

AMEN, Sall!!!!! I enjoy the scratchbuilding also and you put it so well in your post. :-tri
Scott
-
Amen :)
-
Ditto! ;)
-
:-flo
-
Those dual 6-60 pylons look great.Outstanding job.Just make the R-60 and K-13 front ends in different color. The red color represents the protective covers that those rockets ware on the ground. The r-60 has all white, gray or cream front ends and the K-13 has black or transparent.
-
Thanks Dragan :-flo
Ok,i will repaint front end of R-60 in gray, like in this photo:
And K-13 in black:
Thank you for advice. :-flo
-
Finale some time for modeling... :-jump :-ok
Today is "mix day" in my case. :))
I was working on filling and sanding part around back speed brake, painting part in front speed brake, repaint heads of R-60 and K-13 missiles, painted the inside of the brake surface, and paint pylons for R-60 missiles. :-flo
...and made decision about speed brakes. They will be in open position. It it much easier to put them in open position, but to pack them in a closed position, because they are rather poorly dealt. :-flo :-ok
It is all for today. :-razz :)) :-ok
-
:-ok :-ok :-ok
-
Very nice effort mate :-clap
-
Yesss! Sall, bravo, that is the spirit :-ok :-ok :-ok :-tri :-clap :-clap :-clap :-flo :-wave
-
Thank you all guys! :-flo :-flo
Today,i start paint job. :-/
I painted top side of this plane.2 coat of Hu 127.There will be 3 or 4 coats. ;)
Everything is fresh, color is not yet dry. :-flo
-
Nice work, Sall!!!
-
Very nice work with paintbrush, you have improved significantly your painting skills.
-
Really great!!!
-
Does anyone on the forum know if the Revell 1:48 MiG-21 PF is worth buying? Seen one going cheap.
-
I have this kit long time ago and it is so basic and not so precise, better to skip it.
-
Does anyone on the forum know if the Revell 1:48 MiG-21 PF is worth buying? Seen one going cheap.
Academy kit is better, and not so expensive
-
Thanks. I managed to get a KP 1:48 one, so I'll use the spare parts on the Revell one. I saw a build review and it looks quite nice once rescribed. I'll probably get the Eduard one later on :)
-
:-think
KP (OEZ) is MF/BIS/SMT kit, if you are looking for one of these versions, get Eduard.
Academy has MF (actually closer to bis) and PF.
As far as I know these are all injection molded Mig-21 kits in 1/48 available on the market
-
Thanks, I'll get an Eduard one later on.
-
Best one to use my friend is Eduard's with plenty add ons.Resin plus photo etched parts.Second choise would be Academy's,but suffers from lot of innaccurances like spine, tail wing, landing gear hubs and poor detailed cockpit.
Regarding the money managed to spend on aftermarket kits in order to bring it in life, give a try in Eduards which all the above are included.
Nice effort though,keep on.
Z
-
Thanks! I got a couple of Pavla seats through the post, for the -PF and the OEZ kit. I do think I'll get the Eduard kit nearer my birthday, I've been dropping hints.
I still want to to do the Revell kit, there are only a few little errors, and I have plenty of spare weapons. Only thing I can't get is a vacform 1:48 MiG-21 PF canopy :(
-
That's really pitty,I could give you mine OEZ clear canopy, but is MF version, not PF.
Try a search on ebay for pavla vac canopy, thing might have seen one from UK for 3£.
-
Thanks, I'll take a look. The MiG-21 is such an iconic design, I have the Condor MiG-21 "9-13" as well, which I like, although the canopies are poor.
-
Tomorrow i will continue work on this machine! Finally! :-joke
I'm free until October,so... I throw on modeling starting by tomorrow! :-jump :-tri
-
Welcome to the forum, Zetman. Just recently joined myself. What do you build?
-
Thank you ta152,nice to see you.Such nice models are found in here. You will see my constructions posted soon, mostly scratchbuilds and conversion,as vignettes too.you'll see, stay tuned.
But we shouldn't spam the topic :-roll
:-salut
-
Sorry. Looking forward to your builds!
-
No problem guys! ;)
After full day of modeling,i painted this bird in gray... :-tri
Tomorrow i will paint nose, upper part of vertical part of tail, and some part behind the engine in green, and work on enrichment of front leg of landing gear! :-ok
-
Good job!
-
I like it ;)
-
Aha! Good progress from Sall!!!!!! :-clap :-clap :-clap
Time off from "normal" pursuits is always good for modeling. :-ok
-
Thank you mates! :-flo :-flo
Your words mean me a lot. :-flo
-
Now i'm wait to dry all kit,and then i will apply 2,3 or 4 coats of Pronto. When it dries,i will start "Decal job". ;)
In the meantime, while waiting for everything to dry, I will paint the cockpit frame, and make some small enrichment of the front landing gear leg. :-flo
Ps. I painted engine exhaust with MM Gun Metal. It is first time that i use MM metalizer, and it looks cool! :-cool :-tri
-
:-ok :-cool :-clap
-
Look good in this stage. So few days to complete ;)
-
Really excellent!!!
-
It is such a lovely aircraft, it always reminds me of a horse at the gallop. Nice work. The cockpit green is realistic. Sets the tone for a good finish.
-
I work a little bit more yesterday. Paint front leg of landing gear, doors of back wheel bays, speedbrakes, and added two wires on front leg. On some photos,i saw 2 hose, and instead that,on mine leg,i added 2 wires. Everything is tooo tiny, but i'm satisfied with look. :-blah
I have to paint frame od canopy and windshield, paint 2 or 3 tiny details, like hydraulics for opening speedbrakes. Then i had to apply Pronto, decals, and mat varnish. :-paper There is a little more job! :))
Ps. Today i'm not at home,sooo... Work continues tomorrow! ;)
-
Nice wheel!!!
-
Thank you mate! :-flo
Some details painted! Front and back doors for wheel bays the bottom side in yellow zinc-chromate,and hydraulics for speedbrake.
-
:-ok
-
:-tri
-
:-flo :-flo
This will be finished soon. Maybe in monday,no later then Tuesday. ;)
-
Very nice progress--now comes the Final Assembly!
-
Nice progress, Sall, and everything looks just right :-ok
-
Hi mates! :-wave
Thank you for your words! They mean me a loooot!!! :-flo
How to start...? Lets see... :-roll
-1st image shows MiG-21 after first coat of Pronto.
-2nd image shows MiG-21 after second coat of Pronto.
-3th image is Pronto. In Serbia much modelers use Pronto instead of gloss varnish. For that, there is much reason. Pronto is much cheaper. 0.75ml cost only 4.5 euros in my city, and gloss varnish is 2.5 euros, but there is only 0.15 ml... It is the same, maybe better then gloss varnish.
Pronto is much faster drying then acrylic varnish, enamel do not mention, there is no need for that!
-4th and 5th images shows preparation for "decal day"! :))
...
and 5 hours later...
-6th to 13th images shows finished model as regards the decals.
-14th and 15th - I painted frame of windshield and canopy.
About the decals...
Decals are very good. There is no "silvering",becouse they are sooo thin, but because they have one flaw. Very easy to split up, and man must be very, very careful with them. A few times it happened to me, but I somehow managed to deal with it, so now it can't be see.
Now,i have to assembly all parts, and apply matt varnish,and... This will be finish model.
I'm much tired now,and that job i leave for tomorrow!
-
Nice result, mate! Your build is excellent. Pronto seems to be the equivalent of Klir and Future. As you say, more cheaper than gloss varnish for modellers...
-
Thank you very much Daniel! :-flo :-flo
You are right. Pronto is the same thing like Klir or Future! ;)
-
Bravo, Sall!
-
Thank you Scott.
I forgot to say one more thing. Canopy will be in open position, becouse if i close him, there is some hole about 0.5mm. I have no more nerve to bother with that. ;)
-
Well- due to the various shortcomings, many people decide to alter cockpit just to make some other things more easy
-
Nice looking model, Sall, I believe you'll finish it in the same manner ;)
There's one thing regarding gloss - Klir is faaar more better than Pronto, unfortunatelly not selling in Serbia :-/
-
Thank you guys! :-flo
About cockpit... I like my cockpit. But,becouse of open cockpit, tomorrow i will repaint seat. I will mix some color, because my blue does
not resemble the original. I haven't planned
an open cockpit, but now I have repaint
seat. ;)
-
It looks great.I forgot to mention to you that the decals are very very thin so be careful with those. For your next build please attach glue and sand the gaps at the joining of the windshield and fuselage. It will be a learning point for you and a huge improvement of your skills.

Thanks Dragan. :-flo
As for the windshield and the fuselage is concerned, I have not yet come to that stage, but I will certainly fill the hole. Today I checked what kind of gaps will be created, and will need to fill a small gaps.

Nice work!

I spot it now- position of the rear fuselage roundels are not the same on both side... ?
-
You are right. :(
The left roundel is lower a bit more than it should be. Namely, decals are very thin, so I wanted to tear the roundel moving in the right place. :-roll
It can be called "tribute inexperience". :))
