Tomahawks In 1/48
« on: October 11, 2013, 03:01:41 AM »
Here are a pair of old Monogram Tomahawk kits that I've had in storage since the 1980s. Finally it is time to pull these two out and do something with them!

First step was to pull all the parts out of the box and take inventory. It turns out that everything is there except one set of gunsight posts. Then it was down to starting the build again. I'd started one of these when the kit was new in 1985 or so. I'll be adding a resin cockpit on both:

I've spent a few minutes each evening working on these, far enough to get the main airframes built. These old Monogram P-40s are more work than I remembered--the fit is not the greatest and both of mine were warped from years in the box. However, after some CA glue and a bunch of putty they're at this point now, ready for touch-up filler in numerous places:

After some time simply resting on the desk these two Tomahawks are finally getting some paint applied:

No photos, but these two old Tomahawks are completed with the exception of some weathering. It was fun to slap these together and remember when I built the first one so many years ago. In fact, I substituted some parts from my first one (landing gear legs and wheels mainly) that I built over forty years ago!

I have a camera again, thanks to good work by the Canon people. They were very quick to send me a replacement unit for the one I broke and my compliments to them for this!

This photo was taken just before the old camera failed and I could now download it. This was a while ago but shows the underside of the P-38 and the other Tomahawk topside painted. I'll take some more pictures of both Curtiss machines and post them as time allows.
