On the outbreak of war the French authorities refused his application for service, so he travelled to Los Angeles to become a commercial pilot, studying at the California Institute of Technology. Clostermann joined the Free French Air Force in Britain in March 1942.
After training at RAF Cranwell and 61 OTU, Clostermann, a Sergeant Pilot, was posted in January 1943 to No. 341 Squadron RAF (known to the Free French as Groupe de Chasse n° 3/2 "Alsace"), flying the Supermarine Spitfire.
Spitfires 1943-44
He scored his first two victories on 27 July 1943, destroying two Focke-Wulf Fw 190s over France.
In October 1943, Clostermann was commissioned and assigned to No. 602 Squadron RAF, remaining with the unit for the next ten months. He flew a variety of missions including fighter sweeps, bomber escorts, high-altitude interdiction over the Royal Navy's Scapa Flow base, and strafing or dive-bombing attacks on V-1 launch sites on the French coast. Clostermann served through D-Day and was one of the first Free French pilots to land on French soil, at temporary airstrip B-11, near Longues-sur-Mer, Normandy on 18 June 1944, touching French soil for the first time in more than four years. Clostermann was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross shortly afterwards, after which he was reassigned to French Air Force Headquarters.
Tempests 1945
In December 1944, Clostermann returned to the front line, on secondment to the RAF as a supernumerary Flight Lieutenant. Clostermann joined No. 274 Squadron RAF flying the new Hawker Tempest Mk V. In an aircraft which he dubbed Le Grand Charles, Clostermann flew an intensive and highly successful round of fighter sweeps, airfield attacks, "rat scramble" interceptions of Messerschmitt 262 jet fighters, and rail interdiction missions over northern Germany over the next two months.
In March 1945, Clostermann briefly served with No. 56 Squadron before a transfer to No. 3 Squadron. On 24 March 1945, he was wounded in the leg by German flak and after belly-landing his badly damaged aircraft, he was hospitalized for one week. From April 8, he was commander of A Flight, No. 3 Squadron RAF. Clostermann was awarded a Bar to his DFC for his successful tour of duty. He had to bail out for the first time on 12 May 1945, when during a victory fly-past, a Tempest collided with his aircraft. Clostermann continued operations with No. 122 Wing RAF until he left the military altogether on 27 July 1945.
In his 432 sorties, Clostermann was credited officially with 23 victories (19 solo, 14 shared, most of them against fighters) and five "probables", with eight more "damaged". He also claimed 225 motor vehicles destroyed, 72 locomotives, five tanks and two E-Boats (fast torpedo boats). Many references credit him with 29 to 33 victories, although these probably include his "ground" kills. Recent, more detailed analysis of his combat reports and squadron accounts indicate that his true score was 11 destroyed, with possibly another seven, for a total of 15-18 victories.

Anyone feel free to join the build :-flo

Excellent! I hope that I could get any Beaver kit and to make conversion into the machine he flew in Algeria ;)
-
Great! :-jump Let me join with the Smer 1/72 kit with Revell decals. This is a present of our dear tenk, on of modeling gurus of mine :) :-obey
Kit is bought just as it looks, no box etc, (its a special story and, maybe, tenk and Samuraj77 too, can add a little bit of it here if they want).
Here we go:
-
Sorry that I already took off some parts from a frames (I forgot to photograph them before). Also there are two color schemes one of which is to be Closterman's "Le Grand Charles" with a "D day" strips, but it is uncertain and probable wrong - the airplane number is wrong, so I need to find proper color scheme for "Le Grand Charles". It is interesting that Revell made decals for this non existing "D day" scheme. Anyway, there is still long way to painting.
Here is the rest of the kit. :-wave
-
Is this first plastic kit group build on forum? I know that we have group illustrations challenges...
-
As long as I am a member; I think this is a first... but I am not so shure :) :( :-think
Here is some more steps from me (on the last photo arrow on the right shows irregularity - future rasping job :)))
-
And beginning of work on seat - it seems that some detailing mania has took me; "great modeling spirit" put spell on me! :-help :))
:-wave
-
Of course, I am not able to avoid mistakes, so I first painted interior in something that should be RAF interior, but I saw that it is not OK, then I put all in black (and that black is so bad, old, wrong), and... blah, blah, blah... still, improvised belts went pretty good ;)
-
further: the seat, first hand of proper RAF interior green color...
-
:-clap :-clap
-
Thanks chief :-flo
Now, connecting seat, floor and steering pole; painting an instrument panel...
-
than, detail madness on the sides of the cockpit...
-
well, this is starboard side...
-
Hi mates, Hi Samuraj77, :-salut
Great project ! bravo !
Tempest V, RAF serial NV 724 is post-war. Pierre Clostermann's last Tempest during the war seems to have been SN 222.
PHC joined RAF 274 Sqn on 2nd march 1945, went to 56 Sqn on 17 March 1945 and finally 3 sqn on 8 April 1845 and left on 27 august 1945.
The different Tempest V that PHC flew, were : EJ 781, JJ-x ; NV 722, JJ-x ; EJ 893, JJ-W ; NV 942, JJ-x ; NV 722, JJ-x ; NV 971, JJ-x ; EJ 706, JJ-x ; NV 660, JJ-x (274 Sqn), EJ 708, US-W ; NV 728, US-X ; NV 927, US-Z ; NV 965, US-S ; EJ 804, US-M ; NV 970, US-O ; NV 987, US-R ; NV 667, US-A ; SN 131, US-P ; EJ 536, US-W ; NV 968, US-G ; NV 974, US-K (56 Sqn), NV 994, JF-E, SN 222, JF-x and post-war NV 724, JF-E.
Something else : GC Alsace was RAF 341 Squadron. It became officially GC 3/2 in November 1945.
Cheers,
Jicehem :-wave :-wave :-wave

Excellent info! There would be rally great if any additional images of his airplanes could be found :)
-
Yes! Thanks for info, Jicehem :-flo :-flo :-flo; so I'll been working that post war variant. ;)
I continue with the port side of cockpit details (of course this is not in scale, it's just to practice my fingers and micro movements :))
-
ruff sketches I made from some photos I found on net; continuing of painting...
-
and further on...

Hi Letipapa, :-salut
:-ok You're totally right. This JF-E by Revell is NOT "Le Grand Charles". On D-Day, PHC flew still a Spitfire IX (such as the most famous MH526, LO-D) of 602 Sqn. The RAF serial of Revell's should be in the JN series. This plane didn't took part in Normandy landings (as no Tempest V at all). At the time, and since May 1944, 3 Sqn (with new code "JF" in place of "QO") was at Newchurch. From this airfield it made defensive patrols against V1 flying bombs (in company with 91 Sqn on Spitfire XIV). The peak of the attack tooking place in August 1944 (I think...)
Cheers,
Jicehem :-wave

Hi Samuraj,
Great job ! :-obey :-obey :-obey

Jicehem, thanks for information :-flo
and, here is more cockpit, and than gluing of the two halves and wings. :-wave
-
Detailing is really well done!
-
Thanks No1 :-flo :-flo :-flo
...and, because there is a big gap on the right wing root I tried to band right wing a little (the gap was not glued yet) and put some super glue and Na bicarbonate in it...
P.S: see how almost nothing of cockpit details is not visible :-smey, still I like I did it - I know it is inside. :))
-
Hi mates, :-salut :-salut
Very amazing job ! :-obey :-obey
Some details for your Tempests :
Fairings between undersurfaces and auxiliary taks are transparent :

NV 994 during production (And Hawker's strike during the summer of 1944 at Langley) :
tempest was the only single-seat fighter dispensed with the incline gunsight reflector glass, the gunsight ring projected directly on the windscreen to which the very highest quality of non-distorting armoured glass was used.

Bad surprise ! The Smer model is former Heller's. I built some and never had this bad surprise... Maybe the molds are now a little too old.
Generally, I don't fill the gap but I widen the fuselage with struts made from plastic.
Cheers,
Jicehem
-
Transparent fairing!!! I did not note this detail before, this is very good to know ;)
-
Generally, I don't fill the gap but I widen the fuselage with struts made from plastic.
The most clever I mast say. It did not came on my mind - well on next such a case, I will try that;
thanks Jicehem. :-flo
No.1, those transparent fairings - for me it is quite unbelievable! :-eek
Here are more photo's of this slight banding and filling of the right wing and then (I tell you, some
magic spirit put bad spell on me :-wch :)), I saw what a bloody idiot am I - completely forgot to put
radiator and the other two elements that are going into lower nose (air intake) area. Horror!
Unbelievable! :-eek :-red :-red :-help :-dal
My sweet Lord! :-eek But, I could not surrender so easily and "quick field operation" was done in a meter
of minutes. Luckily, only one panel line on each side was cut - that is the worst harm that is made.
The cut will be fixed with putty and careful sanding (I hope).
Huh, life of the modeler is full of action! :)) Especially such modelers as your crazy mate is. :-smey

Great work, Letipapa! :-ok
It seems that this detailing madness got you really hard :-think, and you're right - the most important thing is that YOU KNOW its' inside, no matter is it visible or not :-jump
For forgotten parts - don't worry, it happens from time to time to everybody, just have to slow down the rush to get the model assemblied as quick as possible ;)
Carry on, soldier, it's fine work you did so far :-wave
-
Hi mates, Hi Letipapa, :-salut
The manner you assembled the forgotten parts is perhaps better than on the original kit... Assembling is far better ! :-ok
Cheers,
Jicehem :-wave
-
Thanks mates :-flo :-flo :-flo your support is precious. :-obey :)
Now, I had a mess of different obligations these days, so I'll continue little bit after, but I expect our dear tank and Samuraj77 will post some of their progress here (although, who knows how many different models they are doing right know :)))

Hi mates, :-salut
Here are better photos of NV 994 :
This photo was taken by Charles Brown along the Dortmund-Ems Kanal, near the little city of Riesenbeck, on 18 April 1945 :

An extreme close up doesn't permit to read the serial, but it's possible there is a digit 2 in it :

Amazing! So goood and inoperative... combat digital art ;)
-
Amazing photos mate...
Thanks
-
Some little progress from my side (BTW, last night, I posted this completely wrong on "Mystere IV A" theme, so if somebody sow that, I apologize. No.1 sow it :), and now I corrected this; was so tired so my concentration slipped away).
OK, what I did is that I sprayed model with layer of Al silver to see all wrong things, and there was a lot.
-
And here are results of first putting and sanding. Some lines have to be cut in anew, and still some putting and sanding is necessary. :-wave
-
You are right- Mystere does not look like Tempest, Tempest is better look like Tempest :))
-
:-salut :-wave
-
I decided to put more putty (this time I'm going to check use of ordinary car putty), and I made special light tool for that (phot.1-5)
First I worked on wing and fuselage joints which I surrounded with protective paper tape due to not destroy paneling when sanding (phot.6-8)
As I used more putty than I needed, I saved the hardened rest for future - it is good fore some explosion debris. I already have lot of such material (phot.9-11).
:-wave
-
And more sanding, and then I cut off the air door on the rear underside of the air intake. I'll make new one in opened position. ;) :-wave
-
You really work hard on this subject :-clap
-
I give my best! :) :-flo
I did some panel re scribing, and I had problem with parts of putty falling off in the areas of wing roots, I did whole upper wing surface panels, so now I can have little more putty (in this wing root area) to correct what is necessary, and than, again putty and again sanding but this time without fear. ;) :-wave
-
First time ever to re scribe panels?
-
First time with "Tamiya" scriber, I bought recently, and second time in my life (first time I did it with a simple needle), and it was unpleasant to do it now when hull and wings are assambled. There are mistakes and I'll gently fill them with a putty. Next time I hope do panell scribing first.
-
And also first time I use "Mr Surfacer 1200". Our dear Samuraj77 was telling me, more than enough times, what it actually is, but my mind always full of very much different things than modeling didn't worked well, so until I used it, I didn't know what it was. Now I know, and this was cold shower for me. Every bloody mistake of mine (and there were a lot) of inscribing panels was there, clear and shouting. Especially connection of wings and fuselage. Alarm, disaster, achtung, hilfe, help, alert, etc! - how messy I was. This was a lesson, I tell you. :-eek
OK, now, thanks to Samuraj77 I got another thing that could help me now - "Mr Surfacer 500" (liquid putty) with which I hope to precisely correct these mistakes. Than sanding again, and than... Hard task in front of me, but I go on. When I look how many times our dear Second Air Force is doing this process ( making the surface perfect), than I am not confused, only that I am looking to avoid much inscribing now. ;) We shall see :-wave
-
So you get new moment in your modeling life- before and after surfacer :)
-
Nice work Letipapa mate :-flo
Here is more photos of my tempest...
I finally decided to make NV994 Tempest, don't have the serials so I am going to draw them on the kit... :-think
-
Excellent! :-tri :-ok :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap
what is it you masked with that "artist masker" (or what the name is)? :-think:-think :-wave
-
Thanks mate, you can see glosssy surface on the same photo where I photographed Artistic media - same thing as Humbrol Mascol, but cheaper and even maybe better ;)
I used it to mask underwing surfaces and horisontal tail
-
Aha! Very unusual pattern of masked surface, is that to be just different color (allready sprayed), or it is just a variation (lighter, or darker, or faded, or...) :-think :-think :-think; i still don't get it, but it's OK, it will be a surprise. ;) :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-wave
-
Very good progress and model look very fine!!
-
Satisfied not still is me! Stuck in putty mud am I! :-razz
:-wave
-
At least you spot some of the very small details on surface ;)
-
Yes, and they are not so small, better to say they are terrible :-green :-wave
-
Well, I need a little help of my friends. It is about that little door under the air intake - it is circled red on photo's 1-4. This door have levers (or just one lever) that are (is) opening it and keeping in position (good seen on photo 5, big red arrow).
So, are there two such levers on the sides or is it one in the middle? I simply can not see and know for sure.
Also, on photo's 6 and 7 (restoration of a Tempest) something is seen left inside (red arrows) the intake undergoing restoration - could this be that door with a lever :-think :-think :-think
If this is the case than obviously there where two such levers on the sides.
Anybody knows about this, or have some photo or drawing??? :-think
I am to make this door on model and question of levers is important for me to proceed with works. :))
Thanks in advance, Letipapa :-flo:-wave

go,go papanik! :-clap

Yes Master! :) :-wave
And, I finally found what I was looking for: there is only one bar that is lowering aft radiator shaft hatch, but there are two strings too (maybe for pulling it up). That's it, so I can proceed with work. :-jump
-
Again, me, it is! :-smey
Caught some time and did Tamya putty ones more, than drilled holes for guns made from medical needle. Although inner pair of gun's tubes are not visible, I suppose they actually are if you look from the front. This is not necessary at all, but for me in a modeling stadium in which I am now - this is one of "bear necessities, la, la, laaa, bear necessities...! :-smey"
Next what follows is final scribing (where necessary) and then the previously studied hatch build with some details. :-wave
-
OK, the hatch: Samuraj77 even gave me a piece of metal for this ( :-flo), but my silly eye saw that the hatch has a variable profile (thinning to the end, photo 1), so I used plastic and cooper wire (photo 2). Afte gluing (phot 3), I cut off the rest on the belly side (photo 4 & 5). Next, after completing the surface of whole model, is montage of the hatch, and than the start of camouflage painting. :) :-wave

Good :)

Here is my Tempest finished :)
Finally I decided to make a warbird sample that Jicehem providedd photos

This makes my modeling spirit high! :) Thank you :-flo :-wave

Hi Samuraj, :-salut
Splendid ! Very beautiful work on a very beautiful plane. :-love
The only one detail I think to be retouched are the yellow tips of the propeller blades. They were actually 6 in. (about 2 mm in 1/72)
But this build is amazing.
Cheers,
Jicehem :-wave

Heh, It's me again - experimenting: somehow I succeed to glue this shaft. :) ;)
Hope it will not fall off easyly :(:-wave

Sprayed in medium sea gray...
-
Than underside (and lower side parts of the hull) protected, then model sprayed in dark sea gray...
-
I was lucky to find RAF Ocean Grey (which is exact color for this airplane - that's what writes in the instructions), so I gave a coat of it. The next of colors is RAF dark green, but first is masking with "Blu Tack". But before these, I did cables for closing the air intake belly shaft. Quite unnecessary, but I like it :))
:-wave
-
Excellent!

Thanks No.1 :-obey
Here is painstaking masking and than spraying with RAF dark green :-wave

And this is how it went out...
