Here's a kit that has been neglected in my collection for long years, the Tamiya 1/48 Emil. Several years ago I pulled this one out to do a comparison with other makes of the E variant but then put it back into storage for another day. Since I've built the Hobbycraft, Hasegawa, Airfix and Eduard Emils I felt it is time to finally take this one onto the bench. (I confess that my inspiration was when Santynus returned and did some new profiles here: http://www.letletlet-warplanes.com/forum/vazduhoplovna-umetnost-warplane-art/bf-109e/ )

All in all, this looks typical Tamiya--I've set some of the principal elements together with no glue or tape and the fit is excellent! Reading reviews of this one (first edition) tells me that the nose is too short and there are some other issues, but it looks like an Emil to me!!!

Well, not so much time to build right now, unfortunately. However, the small amount of time spent on this kit has been very relaxing. Tamiya did a great job of engineering this Emil and it nearly falls together on its own! The cockpit was built up in the usual way and then placed in the fuselage. The detail in there is nice, not as crisp as the Eduard kit, but good for this build. I did add Tamiya tape for seatbelts, but otherwise it is from the kit box.

Then a few minutes more and the main elements are together, and after the photo was taken just a small amount of filler was applied to wing leading edges and cowling areas.

They're like good candy--I can't seem to resist them.

(I confess that I'm getting to feel a similar pull from the Hurricane and Spitfire, especially early ones.....

Yes, Yamiya's Emil looks pretty as an "Emil", but, in reality, it's the fuselage which is too short by about 3 mm. Almost insignificant for the rendering but too surprising an inaccuracy. From Bf 109 A through K, the length between fire-proof bulkhead and the rear extremity of fuselage is 5 182 mm, or near 108 mm in 1/48 scale.

Yes, that is a good explanation. A couple of reviews I'd read had some remarks about the nose being wrong, but I didn't really see a lot. With your diagram showing the short area it makes it easier for me to pick a scheme that will mask the problem!

How I did the correction :

Another detail : the back framing of the the fixed back part of the canopy which locks the canopy on the fuselage by overlapping this latter. To represent this detail, I added a band of tracing paper larger then the framing.
