So, I have received yesterday the two Mirages V kits I've ordered at PJ Productions. A Mirage V was still existing in their catalog but in resin with some metal parts: wheels, nose antenna... and a little bit of photoetch.
This brand new kit is in injected plastic. More easy to build; more cheaper; it contains meanwhile some resin parts and photoetch too. Resin parts are the elements that differenciate Mirage V from Mirage III.
I have seen comments saying that the engraving is a little bit too deep, but personnally I'm not bothered with that (it's not at a Matchbox level!) and the use of black paint will help to fill the gap, and to pre-umber...
My first impressions are good. I really hope for an easy build.
Technically speaking, that injected Mirage V is the result of a co-operation between PJ Productions and High Planes Models from Australia. Actually there are two Mirages released under that cooperation (Mirage V but also Mirage III at 1/72 scale); PJ and High Planes selling the kits under their respective labels in their "zone of influence".
After having had a little break in our hobby (due to different reasons) I wish to resume building kits I really want to build; I will begin with that Mirage. Of course the kits I have to review will be also built in the same time - but this build is my preferred to do, I must say...
My first operation today is to give a bath to all the plastic parts, to remove the products used for moulding.
I own also in my documentation an old "Lock-on" book from Verlinden about the Mirage V, that was written by Walter Pieters... Very useful!
-
This look so good, I am really surprised with offer and look of the parts. Hope you will get time to enjoy in this kit :-ok
-
I agree, this look so good! :-ok
Can't wait to start build! :-jump
-
Looks like a very nice kit! :-ok Is the molding done by High Planes? If so it is very impressive as I have a couple of High Planes kits from several years back and must say that tis is a vast improvement.

Ernie
Ernie,
The sprues were produced in China or in Eastern Europe, for High Planes and PJ. Big improvement indeed...

Okay, that explains the difference in the sprues. Very nice moldings, even though the High Planes kits were not too bad for low pressure injection molded kits, and I do enjoy them.
Ernie
-
This looks like it will be a great build!
-
Thank you Scott!
First stages of building: the wings; fuselage and a view of both (not glued together yet)
-
Nice mate!! :-ok
Kit look muuuuuch better then my Airfix Mirage III. ;)
-
I agree with Sall, definitely look better design ;)
-
Yes friends, design seems to be very good. Of course, some putty will be needed... But all seems OK for an easy build.
As Y also own the resin kit ofthe Mirage V from PJ, I will make a comparrison for the two kits. The resin kit will appear as soon as needed ;)
-
I have applied Vallejo putty. Excellent result for the fuselage; but for the wings I will have to redo the job with Tamiya putty: there is no panel line where putty is applied; so Vallejo is not the good item there...
-
For some things need filler which bite hard :))
-
Exactly my friend! ;)
-
Please, when you fill this panel line, take pic of them. :-flo I just want to see how it look when master fill/sand it. ;)
-
The wing joints are the same as that old Monogram F-106 I built last year. These can be kind of frustrating to fill even though you'd think it to be simple, but it does preserve the sharpness of the leading edges.
Scott
-
No problem, mate! But it will be for thursday I'm afraid...
-
First stage: Tamiya tape to delimit the zone of work; and then Tamiya putty diluted with aceton...
-
This is wining combination ;)
-
I agree! Nice! :-clap
-
;)
-
First sanding; then second putty (green): must be sanded again and some panels have to be rescribed...
Good progression ;)
-
:-ok
-
Today, a little bit of surgery was needed, because the aircraft I want to build is one upgraded in the '80s; so I have to use the resin part and remove some plastic...
I have also finished sanding and recribed some panels.
Finally I've glued the fuselage and the wings - Again, some putty will be needed.
-
Now the thing is growing :-clap
-
Great fun to watch the surgery!
-
Nice progress. ;) Now again fill/sand job. :-bat
-
Yes, putty and sanding again...
The sprue+liquid glue falled out of the resin part; I've used miliput this time...
-
At least it will merge like rock :))
-
:-clap
-
A long moment of solitude today: sanding the wings... :-green
Minor corrections needed; this time for the use of putty with toluen, the window of my workbench was open!!!
Preparation of the cockpit parts; exhaust and I gived some effect with lime on the drag chute housing cone: on the photos of actual aircrafts, that cone is damaged because it is jettisoned when the drag chute activating handle is pulled and is later retrieved by groundcrew...
-
Nice! :-ok
-
I see you take attention to every details, this would be great when complete :-ok
-
I see you take attention to every details, this would be great when complete :-ok
I must say that for this particular build I try to have the maximum of details...
So, my BA-23 will be represented for the mission 1690 flown by Capt avi JC Bodart on 20 may 1987, from 13.01 to 13.22 ECT; mach 2 (2.120 km:h); altitude reached: 11.000 meters... ;)
-
I like build with story behind :-clap
-
I like build with story behind :-clap
Me too. ;) Nice story, and high speed! :-clap
-
Story will be even nicer when the kit will be finished - but let me reserve you the surprise ;)
-
We wait and we are patient :))
-
Yes, the history of the flight and airplane are a great part of the story!
-
;)
Today works:
I have first placed the tail, the UHF blade antenna and the upper spine TACAN antenna. Then, the exhaust. Then, the nose is assembled with the antenna.
The air intake needed some extra work, to create panels that are not represented on the kit...
And finally some work on the undersurfaces.
-
Very tiny work on engraving on intake cones :-ok :-clap
-
Good! :-clap :-ok
-
Thank you mates! ;)
-
Little progress, again playing with putty...
And... Ta-daaam!!! Second Mirage V appearing; always 1/72 from PJ but this time the resin kit. That will become a V BR.
-
:-clap :-clap
-
:-ok
-
That looks like nice resin! :-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Resin kit is very nice and IMHO better than the injected one.
...But still working on the injected: putty and sanding, one more time...
-
Full time job! Manufacturer should pay to you mate :-smey I joking a bit but I am really impressed with subject where is extra effort need, where we prove that we are modelers!
-
You're right my friend: it's a nice little kit, but asking for lot of work. And it's not finished yet...
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Nice progress... :-clap :-ok
One thing-can you, when you start work in cockpit and when you finished it, take some closer shots? I'm very curious to see how is cockpit. ;)
-
Nice progress... :-clap :-ok
One thing-can you, when you start work in cockpit and when you finished it, take some closer shots? I'm very curious to see how is cockpit. ;)
Sure Sall, I will take close photos - As close as my camera permits ;)
-
:-ok
-
watching... looking forward for the progress...
-
Thank you!!!
Resin kit: that stage is always giving lot of stress to me: the cut-off of a vacuformed canopy, with a razor blade that generally prefers my fingers than the vacu...
Wel, stress but no blood, no damage, and finally a good result! Of course, minor adjustements still needed, but minor effort to do...
-
Sensitive work, I see...
-
Good job. ;) Cockpit look fine from here. ;)
-
thank you!
-
Here's something I've done when cutting out vacuform canopies: Before cutting pack your favorite modeling clay or putty into the canopy cavity until it is full. This will strengthen the plastic and allow you to more easily make the desired cuts without the possibility of kinking or damaging the transparency. The clay also makes parting lines a little easier to see on some canopies. The only thing that is a drawback to this method is making sure your clay or "play-doh" putty doesn't contain anything that might stain the clear plastic.
-
Many thanks for the tip Scott, it will serve fother some other kits I own!
Today: airbrushing primer...
-
:-clap
-
Huh... there is so many parts :-ok
-
Amazing kit!
-
Thanks friends!
Many parts of course, but two kits... ;)
-
Painting work has begun on the Martin Baker MB4 (for the Mirage V BR, resin kit)
-
Even in this stage look great. Go ahead mateeee! :-flo
-
Excellent seat--I have enough trouble doing those in 1/48!
-
Work in progress on both Martin Baker MB4 & MB10.
First photo thanks to my daughter Mathilde... :))
-
Magnifier glasses are great and work is top!
-
Thank you! ;)
-
Great work mate! :-clap
One question. Both kits are Mirage V,or resin is Mirage III? On what kit you will use MB 4 and on what MB 10? :-think
-
Thank you Sall!
Both kits are Mirage V. PJ Production released first in 2004 a resin kit that is very nice and finely molded - but, of course, in resin! So, sales are not comparable with injected kits... And this year, thanks to a partnership with High Planes from Australia, PJ released an injected Mirage V. Better sales to come, but I must say I prefer the resin kit...
Martin Baker 4 were used until the 80's then progressively replaced by MB10. The two aircrafts I will build are from the 80's, but for the Mirage V BR the seat will still be an MB4 (seta not replaced yet by the MB10)
For what concerns PJ Production kits, there is also a Mirage III in resin (and a biplace one too) but an injected Mirage III will be available in june.
-
All right! Thank you for answer. :-flo
So in resin kit you will put MK 4,and in injected MK 10. ;)
-
Exactly, Sall!
-
Pieces of art!
-
Thank you! :)
-
Painting of seats is finished; there are varnished with Pébéo Gloss Varnish. Now it will be time for an oil wash nd then for some weathering.
-
Excellent work on seats. :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you mate! ;)
-
This is jewel, only problem it really look like seat :))
-
Awesome result! :-ok Amazing what you have done with those seats in 72nd scale1
Ernie
-
Thank you!!!
-
...Progress on the resin kit...
-
Interior look great but it look like you will have some additional work on wing join line
-
Interior look great but it look like you will have some additional work on wing join line
Yes my friend, and an important one because one of the wing corner is not correctly aligned with the fuselage... But I think I have the solution in mind...
-
:-ok :-clap
-
Looking great!
-
Thank you!!!
-
I have corrected the dyhedral problem on the right wing with a piece of Evergreen: first, glued with cyano on the wing then when dry, glued on the fuselage side, correcting the wing. After that, razor blade in action...
Next step: lot of putty used...
-
Try to make advertisement for putty :-smey
-
Nice progress and a lot of putty! ;)
-
Thank you! ;)
-
Back to the seats: oil wash...
-
Little wonder :-ok
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Excellent! :-clap What you use for oil wash? :-think
-
Artist oil paints I guess, they are still the best ;)
-
I also think so! ;)
Maybe some of you can describe his method of weathering on cockpit, seats, etc in our topic "Some modeling techniques" with some In-progress photo tutorial... :-flo What you use for that, how you worketc..
Of cource if you and when find time. ;)
-
Thank you mates!
For oil wash, I use "Wash Brown" from Abteilung 501...
-
Pébéo matt varnish is airbrushed on the seats. The leather of the MB4 is then corrected with Pébéo gloss varnish. Both seats look good; I'm glad of the result. But I envisage to try some weathering in supplement...
Black sprayed on the cockpit elements.
-
:-clap
-
Yes,seats are excellent! :-clap :-clap I don't see details in cockpit very well, but after painting,no doubt that will be like seats. ;)
-
Thank you, my friends!
Well, seats are finished now: I've used Tamiya pastels for some weathering. I'm very glad of the final result!
-
:-clap :-clap
-
Sakura chalks are also credit as very good but any artist chalks can work :)
-
thank you!
And yes, any good chalk can be used...
-
Little progress inside the cockpit...
-
:-ok
-
Pébéo gloss varnish airbrushed
-
Gloss inside? Interesting info :-ok
-
No my friend, it's just before aplying oil wash... After that, I will spray matt varnish
-
Aha- all right then :)
-
Little progress: cockpit part assembled and glued to the fuselage. Some putty will be, once again, needed...
-
All as usual ;)
-
Great! :-clap
-
Thank you!
-
Very nice, and I'm still so impressed that it is a resin kit.
-
Scott, one of the kits (V BR) is full resin one; the other (V BA) is injected with some parts in resin...
Well, once again I'm intiating a new "putty phase": first, Vallejo putty...
-
Good! :-ok You are going forward, and it is most important! ;) :-flo
-
Sanding phase still in progress... Works good on the injected kit; but my efforts were too generous on the resin one; the right wing suffered from an excess of sanding and I have to use miliput to correct my "generosity in the effort"...
-
Nice! :-ok
-
Good side by side work :) I have good experience with Miliput
-
Looking good!
-
one year 1/2... And many happenings later!
Well... First, the resin kit is definitively abandoned. I wasn't able to correct my mistake with the wings.
Then, the plastic kit also was knowing some trouble: showing the Mirage to a good an highly experienced fellow modeller, when he wanted to put it back on my stash, he broke the tail against the stash... we tried both to repare it, then asked to Domi but nothing to do: the reparation was too visible. Fortunately, Philippe Jacques from PJ sent me a replacement tail.
So now it's where I am: I can resume the build, and I will do so soon (begin 2014 I hope)
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap :-ok
-
Back to the Mirage V BA!!!
New tail placed...
-
Elegant ! Excellent choice :-ok :-salut :-wave :-obey :-clap
-
Thank you Tweety8
Miliput...
-
Filler day :))
-
Filler day :))
Exactly! ;)
-
These delta-wings look SO FAST!
-
This project is still alive!!! :))
Canopy is masked.
-
Great project. I enjoyed seeing the different steps of building.
Jicehem :-wave
-
Thank you! ;)
-
Very nice!
-
Cockpit interior to be re-done.
So: black airbrushed
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/mir5091.jpg)
-
I am wonder how the pilot feel inside black cockpit? Or they simply have no time to think and feel?
-
I am wonder how the pilot feel inside black cockpit? Or they simply have no time to think and feel?
It's black, yes, but light black ! :-evil
Jicehem :-wave
-
Black is beautiful ;)
-
Cockpit interior is inserted

Wait- IPMS Belgium work pad, where to get it?
-
Wait- IPMS Belgium work pad, where to get it?
Received as a gift for the IPMS-Belgium jubilee... I can ask to the president Didier Waelkens if it's possible to get one for you
-
Yes :-love :-love
-
First primer airbrushed. That of course reveals some minor imperfections that have to be corrected...
-
Yes :-ok :))
-
After having used putty, I've just sanded the kit.
Air intakes and little antennas are in place; air intakes are also masked.
Times come to go to serious things now: painting the camo!
-
Finally :-ok
-
nice !
-
White primer again and this time all is OK...
-
Rub 'n Buff is used...
-
Look excellent, does it require primer or not?
-
Look excellent, does it require primer or not?
Primer is not necessary (see the Schuckert) but you can apply Rub 'n Buff above paint, like for this Mirage...
-
Little progress using Citadel Colors ink "Brown"
-
Good effect, very good!!!
-
Thank you! ;)
Ink was applied with a 000 paintbrush...
-
Very little progress, but now airbrush can be used...
-
Now it is serious... :))
Tamiya XF-52 as "Tan"
-
Hahaha... it is serious from the very start mate ;)
-
Well... A looooong time ago...
Time to finish it now ;)
-
Masking then Tamiya XF-65
-
Wrap camouflage :-ok
-
Looking good!
-
Beautifully! :-clap
-
Thank you!
Well, having insomnia I worked that night: Masking phase again; then Tamiya XF-61. Masks were removed, details (like position lights, antennas) were handbrushed, then Vallejo gloss varnish
-
Insomnia is good thing in this way :)
-
Sure ;)
-
Decals are set. I had just a problem with the white and black decal of the tail... That decal was to set on both faces; poor quality and misplaced: I decided today to remove it (using lot of MicroSet in the process); I will better paint it.
I have also to attenuate some silvering effects (decals were not of first class...) and for that I envisage 2 or 3 sessions using MicroSol.
-
very nice mate !
-
Thank you! :)
-
They set good finally :)
-
Yes, after so a long time... ;)
-
Preparation of the tail for the correction (replacement of the decal by paint work) and of the starboard air intake, where I have to make a little painting correction...
-
Kitchen towels ;) So we think the same my friend :))
-
Kitchen towels ;) So we think the same my friend :))
Once again as it seems ;)
-
Correction on the tail is done. Excellent result; better than with the decal...
-
Looks great now.
Paper towel is a valuable tool....
-
Thank you Scott!
Sure, paper towel is useful! ;)
-
Oil wash done...
-
:-love :-clap
-
Gorgeous! :-cool
-
Thank you my friends! :)
-
After the oil wash, Pébéo matt varnish was airbrushed...
-
...Then I used pastels. I LOVE this phase... :-love :-green
-
...And finally, final assembly. Ready to go on the base...
-
Life inside plastic kit ;)
-
Sure! ;)
Maybe some explanations for what concerns the base: a loooong time ago I was collecting stamps and I was informed that, for the 70th anniversary of the 2ème escadrille, Belgian Air Force prepared a special flight ("Mission 1690") during wich some philatelic souvenirs were embarked aboard the BA-23. I bought one of those document...
When I stopped to collect stamps, I kept that document anyway; and when PJ Production released the injected Mirage V I had the idea to build the BA-23 and to present it on the document that I plastified and placed on a wood base.
Here is the document...
-
...And here is the final result.
I LOVE that! Now I will send photo of the kit to JC Bodart, who piloted BA-23 during the "Mission 1690"...
Well, more than 2 1/2 year between the starting of the kit and the final result, but... I'm happy. :))
-
:-flo :-tri :-ok
-
Thank you! ;)
-
Jean-Claude Bodart, the pilot of that mission, sent me this comment today:
"Superbe réalisation! Que de beaux souvenirs..."
(Splendid work! So many nice souvenirs...)
-
Now get his signature on the base of the kit ;)
-
This is a great conclusion to your build!!! The whole project is so satisfying.
-
Thank you!
For what concerns the signature, it's present on the souvenir. Hope to meet Jean-Claude Bodart next year and to make some photos with hime near the kit...
-
perfect !
-
Thank you! ;)
-
Mate it is perfect!Bravo! :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you mate! ;)
