Yes, another new build!!! This time it's the MiG-21 UM from Retrowings at 1/144th scale...
The "UM" version is the biplace version of the MiG-21. Retrowings realised some months ago a conversion set for Eduard kit: resin fuselage, seats, and a vacuformed canopy.
But actually, Retrowings releases a limited edition of two boxing. Each box contains one complete Eduard kit of the MiG-21, plus the conversion set and a decal sheet. The difference between the two boxes is the decals: first box contains decal sheet for European MiG's; the second one for aircrafts having served in air forces outside of Europe... My choice was to opt for an European MiG: having built a Czech monoplace, I wish to add a biplace in my collection and to present both kits on the same base.
So here we are:

Having carefully studied the kit, I decided not to respect completely the instruction sheet. Retrowings offers a new fuselage, but you have to drill the rear to place the exhaust. That seemed to me hard work to do so I preferred to remove the rear of the resin fuselage and to replace it by the rear of Eduard's kit...
The tailpane was also cut as explained by the instruction sheet

Part of the seats is engraved in the fuselage; and the other part is provided separately. There is also a vacuformed canopy and a resin canopy, helpful to duplicate the canopy if you break the one provided with the kit...

...And of course, I broke that :-kr canopy!!!
So I duplicated it... 6 attempts before to be successful but here is the result, already masked

All the parts are removed from sprue and prepared. Painting phase will begin soon...

To want to go faster is not laways the best way to go...
OK, back to the primer...
-
Here we go again... :-green
-
:(
-
Oh, no problem my friend. Better to make one step back than to continue and definitively ruin the kit... ;)
-
Hello, :-salut
It looks well. That will be apparently a pretty finished model kit.
Jicehem :-wave
-
Thank you! ;)
-
Masks are in place again...
-
OK, now ready for the camo... :-green
-
Yes :))
-
Time to come back here!!! :))
Well, when I stopped I had once again problems with painting: my vacuformed canopy was not good enough and that ruined the result. So, one more time, I removed the paint... And the canopy.
During time I tried to vacuform myself a new canopy but I was unsuccessful and kit was put on the stash.
Recently, speaking with Domi from RetrokiT about that kit he proposed me to vacuform a new canopy for me and was kind enough to prepare it.
So, kit is back I just had to use a very few of Vallejo putty...
-
Great, revived from the "must do" section!!!!
-
;)
-
Nicely done mate !
-
Thank you mate!
-
I have masked the canopy...
...And the nose cone was not sharp enough, it was more round. I've slowly corrected that - Slowly but it's really an excellent method: put a drop of cyano - let dry - sand - put a drop of cyano - let dry - sand etc...
I think I've put 10 cyano drops but as you can see on the second photo, result is perfect! :-tri
-
Yes, this looks great!
-
Looks excellent !
-
Thank you!
Little progress... Photo denotes that a little bit of sanding is still needed
-
Yes, the fine work is stil needed, eventually it will be a fine bird, keep up the good work !
-
Thank you!
Black base (special AK Xtreme metal base) airbrushed, but also the typical green.
As you can see, the cone is very fine now
-
Sharp point!
-
Looks fine
-
I will join soon with the UM color profile
-
Thank you and great for the profile!
AK Xtreme Metal Polished Aluminium airbrushed
-
Looks excellent !
-
Thank you mate!

Having no AK Xtreme Metal Steel actually, I've tried to use Gun Metal but that was too dark. So, looking in my stock I found some Gunze Steel (an old can) and paintbrushed it on the 21UM. For the 21MF, I will wait until the Jemeppe expo, mid of may: I've reserved AK products on a seller site.
Anyway, after having painted steel, I've set the decals (Slovakia). Decals are from the kit and are of excellent quality
-
Nice markings! By the way, try to mix Xtreme metals, as I know this can be done

Thank you.
Mixing the Xtreme metals would have been good solution but I didn't have thinked to that...
Anyway, As I've ordered for Steel, I will wait to receive it before to continue my MF ;)
-
It is a stunning metal finish! I enjoy the Slovak markings, too.
-
Thank you Scott :)
-
excellent !
-
Thank you ;)
-
FINISHED!!!
After having airbrushed Pébéo gloss varnish, I have used Tamiye paneliner.
I've constated a bad reaction between Pébéo acrylic varnish and the paneliner; the varnish tends to be removed if you use q-tip to eliminate the excess of paneliner...
...And of course if you use white spirit to do that, white spirit will attack the Xtreme Metal!
Anyway, I was extremely careful and there wasn't big problem...
-
looks excellent, very nice build, congratulations mate !
-
Thank you mate! ;)
