Time to start something that has been in the unbuilt pile for a significant time. I purchased two or three ICM Yaks some time ago so it's time to build one. This is a T/DD/K variant with a few optional parts:

Here are the parts trees on the drying towel. There is a lot of mold release on my sample that was washed off with soap and water:

Decal sheet that I robbed from for my VVS Airacobra last year:

Great start mate, Soviets are not present here much :-ok
-
Nice project!
-
Thanks, mates!
I'm no expert on the Yak series but the kit looks pretty nice to me. I may use a few bits from the Accurate Miniatures Yak-1 to enhance this a little, but it will mostly be out-of-box. The only true "drawback" in here (to my eye, anyway) is that they molded the canopy in one piece.
-
Go forward mate!! :-clap I like this topic!! :-clap :-ok
-
I had much spare time yesterday so it was possible to get this Yak to this point:
As a familiar method, I am using this first kit as a kind of "practice" for later builds of the same family of kits. When I dug into it I found that the cockpit is really rather basic. I added a few details with wire and styrene bits, but not to an extreme. When assembling the interior and fuselage halves there was a small problem with the cockpit floor. After filing the sides of it down a bit everything slotted together. I also decided to glue the open cowling panels on and this took a small amount of filing to get a snug fit. Fitting the wing to the fuselage was no problem at all with just a bit of filler needed on the lower aft interface with the fuselage. It's quite a simple, straightforward model to build, really.

Excellent work Scott, I will be interested in following this as I have a couple of ICM Yak's to be built so I will learn from you! :-ok

This -9 version is really not as nice as the -7, especially the cockpit.

This -9 version is really not as nice as the -7, especially the cockpit.
That is good to know, as I do beleive I have a -7 kit, as well as one or two others, off the top of my head though I do not remember which Mks. they are though.

This going soooo good mate :-clap
-
Well done!
-
Here are the other two ICM Yaks in my collection. These two were purchased at various times in the "consignment sale" section of my local hobby shop for around U.S. $8.00 each. First, the -7:

And the -7V trainer:

Somewhere I also have an Accurate Miniatures Yak-1 that I'll try to find.

After Bf 109 mania I guess there will be Yak mania :))

After Bf 109 mania I guess there will be Yak mania :))
Hahahahaha,i agree!!! :)) :)) :)) :-clap
Anyway, very nice work Scott!! :-clap
-
I only have four kits! ;) However.........there are a lot of extra decals in that Yak-9 sheet. :-tri
There are a nice variety of subjects for the Yak series so a big collection is certainly possible. It's too bad that more photos don't exist of this interesting Air Force.
-
I have one kit from another manufacturer but will built it, I hope soon.
-
Put it here if you wish--we'll do a "personal" GB!
-
All right :))
-
Here is the Yak-9 "practice" build. This is quite a simple kit (not unlike the real machine) and could have benefitted with some scratchbuilding. I did cut the canopy open and made a new sliding portion. I still enjoyed building it and it helps me with planning for the next one. The ICM decals were used, but be warned if you desire to use these kit decals. They are VERY thin and are rather brittle. I cleared the sheet with varnish to help the brittleness, but they still require an extremely long time soaking in water before they come free from the backing paper. Once they were ready to apply they went on absolutely beautifully--no silvering whatsoever and they snuggled down very well.

Completed!!!! You are fantastic!!!
-
Not fantastic, my schedule right now just allows me a bit more free time for modeling! :-paper ;)
-
Another great build on your side today!! :))
Excellent work mate!! :-clap :-clap
-
Splendid!!!
-
Lets join to friend with my Ark Models Yak-9K. It demand engine to be complete before fuselage half's closing
-
Now that there are two of us I changed the title of the thread.
Your Ark Models kit appears to be from the same molds as my ICM kits. Enjoy it, mate!
-
No problem mate, here you are interior painted grey :)
-
Very good and fast job mate!! :-clap :-clap
-
Will tr to push up :)
-
Work today :))
-
Nice job mate! :-clap :-ok
-
Need some sanding and this will be made some later :))
-
That is looking very nice, No.1! I especially like the fit you obtained with the side cowlings.
I've decided I liked doing the first one so much that the trainer should be started:
The -7V has a small bit more cockpit detail than the -9 has, including the nice structural basket as separate parts. One helpful hint for anyone building the fixed-gear trainer--install the landing gear well covers before you glue the upper wing panels on. I didn't do this and it is making the fitment of the covers a little bit more difficult.
Also, for lack of a better place to put this build, here is my LTD LaGG-3 under construction:
This kit isn't very high-tech but I still think it will be a nice display model with some extra work. It's typical of the short-run LTD kits, and since I have sucessfully built two other kits from this manufacturer, I decided to attack this one now. :-bat
-
No matter of kit features, this will be nice Yak series :))
-
I changed the thread title again to add the LaGG. I reckon I should be accurate with the title, eh? ;)
-
LaGG... all right, maybe somebody could join us
-
Great kits are on way!!! :-clap :-clap :-jump
-
Thank you and here you are progress :))
-
Final fitting :))
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap
-
:-ok
-
Kit get into the painting stage
-
Nice and fast progression!!!
-
Indeed!
That monster 45MM cannon really is a distinctive feature! :-eek
Here's a little progress on the two-seater. Notice in the underside photo that ICM includes the landing gear well covers for my fixed gear version. These fit very tightly after a tiny bit of sanding around the edges:

:-clap :-clap :-clap
-
More progress on painting ;)
-
:-ok
-
Here too!
That's all for me today--we're going to eat lunch with family in another town, then maybe a visit to a huge vintage bookstore there :-paper. Hopefully I'll have some new reference books by tonight!
-
Excellent work Scott, and I wish you to find some nice books!!!
-
:-clap :-ok
-
My coming soon...
-
The LTD LaGG is now ready for primer. This kit is rather a lot of work but was all there was until the ICM kit came along. I still appreciate the effort that went into the LTD series of kits. I get more satisfaction building these as they require some effort!
-
Looks nice!
-
Nice work mate and my machine is near complete :))
-
Winter! This is a beautiful scheme, in my opinion.
-
Beautiful snow bird... :-ok
-
When I get it dirt it will look perfect!
-
Fast and very good!!! :-clap :-clap
-
It does miss few tips but it is on completed stage :)
-
This looks great, No.1! :-clap :-clap :-clap Your weathering will inspire me on the LaGG-3!
-
Thank you mate :))
-
:-ok
-
Assorted projects had a Primer Day application this evening, then the LaGG received its underside camouflage:
-
Nice!!!
-
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
No photo taken yet, but the vacuformed windscreen is now installed on the LaGG. This was a tricky item for me and it still needs a bit of work. All those other fighters will end up on a "miscellaneous projects build" thread one of these days.
-
Coooooool!!! :-clap :-clap
-
Here is a small update on the Yak-7V and LaGG-3 projects:
-
Interesting to see them in different camouflage ;)
-
The Yak will be in non-Soviet markings so that's why the different colors. The LaGG will be "winterized" with an overspray later.....
-
I like how it looks... :-clap :-tri
-
Great scale models production, Scott!! very nice job!!
-
Thanks, friends. :-flo I'm sorry I've been away from the modeling desk with other duties........but will try to get back to these projects this weekend.
-
Just take your time mate :-ok
-
Several of the ICM kits contain skis, but they weren't really what I was looking for so these were scratched together from resin bits (made for the CR-42 project last year) and some spare parts. They'll be mounted on an airplane in my next update.....

Very good mate :-clap
-
Look very nicee!! Great job mate!! :-clap
-
Here are the finished Yak-7V in postwar Polish markings, and the LaGG-3 in winter configuration:
Sorry about the photos, we have rain and wind in my "outdoor photo studio". I'll take a few more when the rains stop.
-
I like winter version and photo studio is nice :) Add just another lamp and this will be complete :))
-
I can't have the photo laboratory (kitchen countertop) right now--Ellen is using it to mix cookie dough! :-tri :-clap :-jump
-
:-ok
-
Both models are beautiful! I like their camouflages!! :-clap :-clap
-
Thanks, y'all!
Here are a few more photos of my latest Soviet projects, as promised.
First, the LaGG-3. This LTD kit was a little bit of a challenge, being engineered as a short-run kit, but it still built up without too many pitfalls. Much easier than a vacuform or full-resin kit but it's probably less refined than the later ICM kit. I used my own skis with various spares box bits to attach them to the landing gear spindles. The tailwheel assembly with skid came from the ICM Yak-7V. Also the bomb racks and bombs are from an ICM Yak. I had one photo only of this machine, showing to good advantage the very odd partial winter camouflage application.
Now the Yak trainer, pretty much right from the ICM box. This is a straightforward build except for the wing root intakes which are not molded open. These took some time and drilling to open. Other than that, just a few little detail bits in the cockpits and scratchbuilt sliding canopy segments. The Polish decals came from the Yak-9 decal sheet from earlier build, and the numeral 4 from spares box. I must also mention that this is not finished--after clear varnish was applied I realized that I'd reversed the insignia on the right vertical fin!! :-wall :-wall :-wall :-/......and I didn't have a spare here. So, other decals are coming via post office. Also I knocked the aft right exhaust stack loose during the photo shoot. :-roll I'll fix my errors and post a photo of the corrected machine later.

Very fast progress mate and again my favorite is this winter one (both are very good made!) :-clap
-
Once again, great models my friend!! :-clap :-clap
-
A tiny bit of progress on the next Yak in my projects-pile. Final filling and priming and this will soon be ready for painting.
-
Fast and smooth :-ok
-
Nice! :-clap
-
Fast and smooth :-ok
Oh, not too fast......this has been assembled for eight weeks, but no time or energy to work on it. :-/ I finished work on the seams only yesterday because I was going to prime parts of the 262 also. It's been so long since I started this that I don't remember the markings I was planning for it! :-wall
-
.... markings... all right, you have last set of decals and I guess this can solve problem?
-
Yes, there was a plan, but it's been too long for me to remember...! I have to go back into the project box to see what I had decided on.
-
I've refreshed my memory on this Yak project and carried on with painting. First the underside painting of two projects, this Yak-7 and the Fw 190 D-11 that has been sitting around half-finished also:
Then the topside camouflage (becoming a favorite of mine) was done late today:

Aircraft factory work at full power :-clap

Cleaning up some loose ends before the New Year!!
-
I like it mate!! :-clap

Here is the final product of this latest build. Yak 7A mostly built out-of-box and with the ICM kit decals. Finished before January 1!

Hooray to the master :-tri :-ok :-clap
-
Great, great, great!!! :-clap :-clap
-
Very nice paint job!!!

Here is the last of the series of ICM Yak fighters that I've just finished. Sorry to say, this one was put on hold to do other things and forgotten about!

Again, this is pretty much out-of-box ICM kit with kit decals for the most part. This Yak-9K really does look like a tank-killer with that huge 45 MM cannon sticking out of the spinner!
-
Beautiful Yak mate! :-clap :-clap
-
Lovely work :-ok
