I'm starting a new project for a GB on a French forum: the Fokker triplane.
Eduard's kit is splendid. I own the combo box...
-
Here are the plastic parts (x2, of course: there are two aircrafts in the box)
-
The photoetch, the masks and the decals (in the background, other decals that I have in stock - I'm not decided yet for the decoration)
-
I will also use Karaya Spandau's and Microsculpt "Streaky camo".
First stage: removing the plastic parts from the sprue, and here you have what is needed in plastic for a triplane...
-
Very interesting! A hour ago I have watch some images and one interesting from trainers unit!!!
-
I think I will build one of a Marine Jasta...
-
Maybe good moment to update this topic...
http://www.letletlet-warplanes.com/forum/vazduhoplovna-umetnost-warplane-art/fokker-dr-i/
-
Yes, sure!
...And splendid work as always, mate!
-
Topic is just updated :))
-
Nicest machine ever :-love :-love
The only thing I'm skeptical about is Streaky camo as a decal... Don't know, but I'd always opt for good old paintbrush :-think On the other hand, never ever would try to do lozenge by hand... Therefore, this just might be a quicker and less painful solution :-/
Regarding markings - all of them are beautiful, just pick at random :-ok
Once, if we ever come to this group build, I'd again dig some 5-6 boxes from the cellar :-roll, all of them 1/72 Eduard except one Roden F.I
-
First to say is that the photo was taken with a (bad) day light and don't represent the exact colors.
Then, as you says, it's a painful solution and I will give a try to those decals. Possible that the second Dr.I of the combo box will be paintbrushed; that could be interresting to compare both methods...
And yes, there are so many nice decos for the triplane that it's difficult to choose... But it seems that for this one I will opt for the Marine Jasta deco of the box, perheaps my preferred one after all...
-
Finally I've decided not to use Karaya set of Spandaus: Eduard did an excellent job providing a "base" where you can add their grid in photoetch.
Karaya set will serve for another kit (maybe de D.VII...)
First, I rolled the grid on a toothpick. Why? For two reasons:
1) Toothpick is "solid", you have no risk to deform the grid
2) Toothpick is a little bit larger than the kit's machinegun; so it's more easy to place the grid and then you have just to gently finish to roll...
-
Here is what I have prepared
-
I have also made holes; and after that I removed that parts with a rasor blade; simply because they will be a problem for the decals from Microsculpt. I will replace those parts after having placed the decals...
-
Uhhhh... hard moments for me, I wish to make one right now :( No time for that :(
-
Good job.Everything is so tiny! :-clap
-
Yes Sall, tiny parts are numerous here...
"White day" today: primer airbrushed...
-
I've airbrushed the interior of the fuselage with German Dope Linen from Mister Kit Colors. I know that Eduard suggests to paint in Olive Drab but I think that dope is better because the green bands on the exterior of the fuselage were painted over dope...
Mister Kit Colors are, for what concerns WWI, very nice and on my humble opinion as correct as possible. But I don't like to use those paints; it's not evident. The best way to go with that I've found is to mix with Tamiya thinner... But even so doing, you must be very careful when airbrushing...
-
:-ok
-
Olive streaks were painted over doped linen, therefore couldn't be seen from the interior, therefore you did it the right way :-ok
Always wanted to have those MisterKit colours, but never have ordered it... :-roll I wonder how they would go with paintbrush :-think

Thank you for the confirmation, for the dope.
Mister Kit colors are applying well with paintbrush, I've tried and the result is good.
-
Ready for the painting of the wood...
-
I was always think about option to put real wood as well it is possible to get veneer of 0,2 mm thickness ;)
-
Yes, but the problem is... the thickness, and also the fragility of "wood blades"...
So, I have airbrushed Tamiya XF-59 as wood base.
-
Long time ago, far away in galaxy, I build this:

-
Very nice, mate! I like your plywodd, and also your streaky camo...
-
Plywood is painted :)) Thank you ;)
-
So, today is wood base day for you, Daniel? ;)
Waiting to see that plywood :-ok
-
So, today is wood base day for you, Daniel? ;)
Waiting to see that plywood :-ok
Not especially ;-)
It was a day with many airbrushing; and of course, as many airbrush cleaning than airbrushings...
-
First stage of painting for the engine, with Vallejo colors:
First, Oily Steel with a drop of Glossy Black. Then, Oily Steel + Old Gold.
-
Nice finish!
-
I share No.1's opinion! ;)
-
Thank you mates!
-
Engine finished. A little bit of copper (Tamiya), better than Brass I think; than Boltgun metal from Citadel and finally a wash with Citadel Brown ink, that is excellent to simulate the "pissing oil"...
-
:-love :-jump :-clap
-
For the plywood rendering, I have tested the method recommended by Wingnut Wings: to apply the oil paint with a sponge, and to remove the excess of paint with another one.
I like the result. To be noted that the light gives the impression that the result is darker than actually...
Oh yes, the propeller is not finished yet, of course...
-
the result sure looks convincing, both on Dr.I and D.VII :-ok
-
Good look!
-
I've painted the coussin, and also little elements in wood (that I've forgotten in a previous painting sitting...)
-
:-ok
-
The seat is painted (marron brown)
-
The interior of the fuselage was varnished with Pébéo gloss varnish; then masking again and white primer...
-
A little bit of Vallejo "Oily Steel"...
-
Again tiny parts! :-roll :-clap
-
Again tiny parts! :-roll :-clap
Yes, one of them flew away under the wind of the airbrush... But fortunately the carpet monster had not the time to eat this part!!!
-
:)) :)) :))
-
Little progress...
-
And next step assembly ;)
-
For some parts only, and oil wash for the others... ;)
-
A lot of fittings steps, please note that kit did not get wash for weathering, green color is simply thin coated with few layers of black and green colors
-
Splendid mate, but wrong topic I'm afraid... :-green
-
Splendid mate, but wrong topic I'm afraid... :-green
I definitely need rest :(
-
;)
-
Wow, Daniel's Dreidecker arrived in Serbia, and on the trip has lost one wing and became doppeldecker :-think, has completely changed its appearance :-dal...
Marvels of modern technology :-eek :-green
Srecko, I think you're right - you need a rest ;)
-
It's more than time to continue this one... Must be finished before end of august...
At last, I've finished with the cockpit and glued the half-fuselages together. Some putty needed, then... Painting.
-
Great interior finish, I like the protective green you use inside on metal parts ;)
-
Great interior finish, I like the protective green you use inside on metal parts ;)
It's the WWII RLM color, with a little bit of white...
-
I really like your busy cockpit Daniel! :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you! ;)
-
Nice cockpit, and (once again ;)) the wood is splendid :-ok
-
Thank you Profa!
-
...Well, after the problems encountered with the Microsculpt lozenges on my D.VII, I think I will not use the Streaky camo decals but better use a paintbrush...
-

Paintbrush- yes!!!!!!!!
-
:) :) :)
It will be interesting. ;)
-
Little progress today, I was too tired after a hard week at the office, and suffering from back pain...
Just have put Squadron Green putty (diluted with aceton) but also Vallejo putty. Even with the window open, the vapors of aceton were incommodating today.
Bah! Tomorrow will be another day! :))
-
:-ok
-
What did you cover on the fuselage side mate?
-
What did you cover on the fuselage side mate?
Good eye catching, mate!
Well, when I removed the exhausts, my razor blade removed also a little bit of matter... So, I'm not masking a default of the kit but better correcting an error of the builder... ;)
-
Easy to solve ;) And better to cut plastic then flash
-
Easy to solve ;) And better to cut plastic then flash
Agreed and I confirm... ;)
-
Ready for painting!
I have also glued the exhausts in place; using paint and not decals that's better there are in place...
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Yellow (Gunze H4) is airbrushed on the aircraft
-
Semi covering or not?
-
Yellow is not a good covering paint; that's why I prefer always use white as primer...
-
My opinion is that it have to stay semi covering, real paints was like that. But this is just mu through ;)
-
I fukky agree, mate ;)
-
Thank you :)
-
One step behind...
Funny how different lights can reveal something or not. Yesterday (artificial light) I was happy with my work. Today (day light)... Not at all. The joint between the half-fuselages was visible at some points. Cannot live with that...
Now I've used Mr Surfacer 500. Hope that all will be OK...
-
Cannot live with that...
:)) :)) :)) :)) :-tri :-flo
-
Surfacer 500 solve the thing :))
-
That's why I paint over filled part with MM metalizer, it shows flaws under any kind of light... No worry, I believe Surfacer will solve it.
-
Ready (once again, at least...)
-
:-ok
-
Hope that join line is smooth now ;)
-
Hope that join line is smooth now ;)
Yes me too... Will be attentive after the white primer...
-
:-clap :-ok
-
Thanks, mate!
White primer sprayed on the fuselage and on the propeller, then Vallejo Wood as a base...
-
:-ok
-
Yellow on the fuselage is OK now
-
Coat look nice and completely covering :)
-
Yes, work is better this time ;)
-
Masking tape is placed. Then, I've sprayed "Oily Steel" on the front of the fuselage, followed by an application with a Q-tip of Brown Ink from Citadel Colors. The wheels are also masked and painted with LIght Rubber from Panzer Aces. And, finally, the Spandaus are painted in Boltgun Metal.
-
Good progress mate! ;)
-
Thank you mate! ;)
-
Today I've airbrushed "Fokker turquoise" from Mister Kit Colors. Those paints, once again, are very nice but very fragile and difficult to use. I've diluted 50/50 with Tamiya thinner. Even so doing, there is sometimes little drops of water in the paint - A problem that I never know with paints like Tamiya, Gunze or Vallejo.
But to be honnest the colors of Mister Kit are splendid once applied.
When a drop of water comes on my paint, I continue the work on other locations and when dry I come back to the problem and I spray paint at very low pressure...
Second photo shows you the wheels with the masks removed.
-
Maybe to choose some base coat for surface before use final paint?
-
Maybe to choose some base coat for surface before use final paint?
In fact I will apply gloss varnish (or matt varnish) on the paint before to mask...
-
Nice paint job mate! :-clap
-
While we're on the subject of Fokker triplanes, in the book called "At War with the Bolsheviks" (Robert Jackson, 1972) in the chapter dealing with the air campaign in the South of Russia in the Russian Civil war, the allied ace Raymond Collishaw, whilst flying with the White forces of General Denikin, describes a combat between his Camel F.1 and an all-black Fokker Dr.1. However, no photographs exist of this, which would make a very unique subject for a model.
There are no records of Dr.1's on the Eastern front, although some were used as advanced trainers and for home defence Kesta's. Also, some were given to the KuK : is it possible one may have found it's way to the Red forces.
Any thoughts on this?
-
I know it may seem a case of mistaken identity, as the Red air force did have Sopwith Triplanes. However, they were based in the Northern area during that period. Furthermore, Collishaw was an experienced pilot and ace, and his aircraft recognition skills would have been exceptional, thus adding some weight to my previous post. Markings most likely red stars in the usual positions.
As before, any thoughts?
-
I've posted this in the wrong place, sorry :(
-
I have no information about Fokkers Dr.I in use during the Russian Civil War. But there was an all-black dr.I by the Germans: the one of Jacobs. A special one because Jacobs replaced the original engine by a Clerget...
Could be interresting to obtain some infos on KuK dr.I's... Pricipally if SWORL camo was used!
-
Good progress today...
First I masked the turquoise, then I sprayed the German Dope from Mister Kit Colors. Then I applied the straky with a nr 10 paintbrush and Fokker Olive Green (Mister Kit Colors). And finally I removed the masks...
-
Next photos
-
And last ones
-
Nice work on streaks :-ok :-clap Your first try?
-
Nice work on streaks :-ok :-clap Your first try?
Thank you mate! Yes, it was my very first try. That's why my first intention was to use decals, I had no experience for that kind of camo... But finally, it's really easy! ;)
-
...Oh yes, and the fact that I sprayed matt varnish over the gloss yellow helped to avoid the fact that the tape could let some traces on the paint...
-
This is great to hear :)
-
Looks really nice! :-ok These MrKit colours seem just right, I am thinking of ordering their set... :-think
Have to lay my hands also on some Eduards I have... nah, next year maybe, when I clear this mess of started and to-be-started projects...
-
Today was "decals day"...
-
Very good! :-clap
-
Lovely work on this, the colours look very rich :)
-
Thank you! :)
-
And they lay down greatly :-clap
-
It's simply beautiful!
-
Thank you mates! ;)
-
Wonderful work!
I certainly wish we had a "time-machine" booth that we could take back to see all these wonderful markings in their original settings! I'm glad y'all are building these WWI beauties for us!
-
First photo: some elements that I've forgotten to paint... :-red - And yes, I've used the airbrush for so a little work... :-eek
Second photo: the cover of the fuselage. Painted in Olive Green.
...And finally, as I was not happy with the painting of the propeller: once again... :-cool
-
Good! :-ok
-
Tamiya XF-59
-
Nice wood shade :)
-
:-ok
-
Front side of the propeller: Burnt Umber
-
I had a little bit of free time today (I'm busy with hard works at home)... So, I've airbrushed gloss varnish (Pébéo) on the triplane. Next step: oil wash...
-
So you are on final works ;)
-
So you are on final works ;)
Yes, mate. I have to finish this one before the end of august...
-
End of August... we are related to this period ;)
-
Sure ;)
-
Today, "oil day": painting of the second face of some propellers; then oil wash on the triplane with Washbrown from Abteilung 501
-
What a great look mate :-clap
-
Thank you! I particularily like the effect on yellow paint...
-
Looks so good. I like it! :-clap :-clap
-
Matt varnish...
-
Beauty :-clap
-
Thanks, mate!
-
And now final assembly. Looks very good,as always! :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you Sall!
Well, assembly in progress. And a BIG mistake I made when removing the parts from the sprue: there are two kits in the box, and I've used for this one two times part nr 20 in place of 1x nr20 and 1x nr15...
So I've recuperated one nr15 in the elements of the second kit (and of course placed 1x nr 20 in reserve!)
Not too botherings, but I have to airbrush prime/gloss yellow/matt varnish on ONLY one so little element...
-
Hope that you will have few days to relax as well I hope you will get Hellcat soon!
-
Hope so too...
-
No matter, this looks nice :-ok
BTW, what are these '15' and '20' parts?
-
No matter, this looks nice :-ok
BTW, what are these '15' and '20' parts?
Thanks, mate!
Parts 15 & 20 are the rear "struts" of the wheel train
-
Keep up the great work. It's looking fantastic!
-
Thank you Scott! :)
-
It looks wonderfull and very realistic.I can`t wait to see it finished.
-
Thank you Dragan! Hope to finish it next week...
-
OK, the strut is ready so I have placed the wheel train For the propeller: I airbrushed a mix of transparent yellow and transparent orange; then placed the decals.
Now the haubans, painting of the propeller bosse and it will be finished...
-
:-clap
-
Thank you mate!
-
I like it a lot, excellent work
-
Thank you!
-
:-tri FINISHED!!! :-tri
The last works were the painting of the propeller bosse (Boltgun Metal from Citadel Colors); and the haubans made with steel wire. There were painted with a permanent black ink marker, then some corrections made after their placement with black paint.
Hope you like it...
The second kit of the Combo box will be made later. It will probably be the aircraft of von Tutschek.
Well, any comment welcome... And thank you to have followed that build! :-ok
-
I like it sooo much!!! So cute! :-love
Excellent job,excellent look,excellent everything! :)) :))
-
Thank you mate! :)
-
Absolutely beautiful. These WWI builds are so interesting to me as someone who's always concentrated on the late thirties and WWII.
-
Thank you Scott!
