If you've noticed, Scott, I've used putty to fill the hole and tried to make it recessed. It doesn't look right, though, so I'll try to fix it before painting begins...
You might check it on some pics here as well...
Regarding struts - it's a long way to Tipperrary, so to say. Since I do the paintbrushing, struts go on only after everything is painted...

Sorry, had to make a break in typing to watch last few points in European Volleyball Championship - we just took the gold!!! :-tri :-jump :-tri
BTW, we beat Italians :-green

Back to CR.42 (Italian, hehehe :-green)...
Yesterday and today I was dealing with tiny PE guides for control cables (first few pics), then went to paint and build the engine - cables gave small headache, but nothing serious. Next was painting and weathering of the exhaust: after marvelous Vallejo Oil Steel I applied wet mixture of pigments. This is mat after drying, then hard brush was used to clean the excess material and burnish the rest on the plastic, so at the end there's just right metallic shine.
First two pics in this set show difference between mat and cleaned exhaust, and other two show dryfit of both engines...

Small update - it wasn't enough to detail the engine, I simply had to remove the cowl and make it open :-roll

Congratulations on the Volleyball Championship, Profa, and on the progress you're making with the Falcos. The entire project is beautiful!

I didn't do much to mine today, just added the strut wires and PE aileron cable sets. Then I painted the underside with a mix of neutral grey and RLM 65 that is pretty close to Grigio Mimetico.

Small update from my side - at first I had some problems with engine cowling, and also some putty was needed on the joint between cowling and filter inlet, but now both are ready for painting...
For underside I'll use Humbrol 140, which everybody state as best shade of grigio mimetico...

Usually directly on plastic - have tried primer just once, and had really bad experience - look at http://www.letletlet-warplanes.com/forum/makete-aviona-aircraft-modeling/eduard-172-albatros-d-v-weekend-edition/msg12940/#msg12940.
Possibly I'll go with some acrylic light grey before yellow, to make surface more perceptible, and that's just because yellow is light shade and is Vallejo Acrylic. No primer whatsoever before enamel paints.

Tonight I sprayed the Gaillo Mimetico 3 on the top surfaces. It will have plenty of time to cure before I apply the next two colors of mottled camouflage as we're going to be out of town for a few days. Time for my lovely wife and I to take a short vacation! :-cool
