In general this is yellow interior protective color but will take a look on all images I have and try to see it. I am very glad you like it :))

I, personally, would opt for one open bay as you had mentioned. This would draw the eye of the observer to the right side of the machine and balance the national insignia on the left. On the other hand, you could fold the left wing and have the right one with gun bay opened..... regardless, this is a very nice thread to watch.

I'll also look into the gun bay color. If memory serves, earlier Hellcats had the yellow tinted primer and later production used green, but I'm not certain enough to say for sure.

As well I have mostly black and white images it is hard to give any opinion of the color. Even color image of the burning machine does not show much as well it is burned. I did not search Internet... few others images show engine details as well one of the optional machine to be built, flown by ace :))

I don't think there is a definite reference that can nail down the colors inside the Hellcat. There has been a lot of discussion about the interior of the cowling, for instance. I just found this link that has much of the interesting conversation. http://s362974870.onlinehome.us/forums/air/index.php?showtopic=149739

My guess is that the later the airplane was built the more interior green one would see. A friend of mine had a wing from an F6F-5 and it was green in the bay, but this had come off of a 1970s "warbird" restoration so I wouldn't use it as a good example.

Not many time for modelling today... I've just prepared the PE parts for the ammo boxes, and opened the ejection traps...
