Here is the latest release of the 1/72 Hellcat from Eduard: the F6F-5 version.
It's a really nice kit, completed with photoetched parts and masks.
At first look no important problem. I've just noted that the numerotation of the PE parts on the instruction sheet is not correct; after PE part #12 there are all decaled of one number (if Eduard indicates PE#24, you have to use PE#25 instead).
-
I will eventually use the two following PE sets: exterior for F6F-3 (but many parts are common with the F6F-5) and the gun bay. But for this last one I have a problem: the machineguns made by Aires are needed and I don't own that set and don't have found it at Jadar or Hobbyshop...
-
Good point about numbers mate and about the same kit- you will enjoy the build!!!

Yes, first "dry-fitting" tests reveals that the kit will be a pleasure to build. I have the intention to try some techniques I've seen on a French forum for what concerns weathering...
-
Great mate :-ok Have you choose which one you will make? Maybe to tyr to find any images as guide for you?
-
I'm not fixed yet. I hesitate between two decos...
-
All right ;)
-
This will be great build-no doubt. ;)
-
If your kit is as nice as the 1/48 version in my "to do" stack it will be a very nice project!
-
I don't own the 1/48th scale kit, but this one is really a jewel... :)
-
For me this small is better :) I more enjoy in this one :))
-
OK, I've decided: I will build the aircraft of the boxart. Just because I like aircrafts with so nice eyes :))
I've prepared all the pieces that will receive the interior color.I have also worked with some of the parts of the PE set for F6F-3 exterior: in fact I can use all those parts for the F6F-5; the PE set for this last one being simply more complete. But for me, the one I own is good enough ;)
Well, not evident to manipulate and to form some little parts; it's a nice challenge...
I have also removed some plastic of the half fuselages, to let the place to the just formed PE elements.
I finally placed the masks on the clear parts.
Ready for the airbrush...
-
Excellent start mate, hope that images posted on our forum or web site could be of help. Will search spare box, I think I have some spare machine guns, from... bombers I think ;)
-
Nice job! ;)
-
Thank you!
For the Aires machineguns, I have found a set in a shop in Germany... Hope to receive it quickly!!!
Well, a new use of the now infamous sponge!!! Firstly, I've airbrushed white primer then Gunze H-58 as recommended by Eduard. Once dry, I've applied Maskol (or Neo) with a sponge on the parts. Once dry, I've airbrushed Tamiya XF-4 (yellow green) highly diluted (one part paint for ten parts thinner)
-
Once dry (again...), I've delicately removed the Maskol/Neo with a Q-tip.
Then you have a nice effect of weathering, with a paint that is, as we say in French, "very tired" ;)
-
Excellent and fast work :-ok
-
Great, tiny parts!! :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you! ;)
-
You must take some better photos of cockpit, when it be finished. ;) I think that this will be magnificent! :)
-

I agree for the photos, Sall. The light is poor actually and I don't have good material enough (spots) to make photos...
For the cockpit of course I have lot of work to do before it will be finished. But I really hope to realise the best cockpit I've ever done...
-
I didn't mean on bad photos. :-flo Photos are great, parts are soooo tiny... :-flo ;)
I wanted to say that you must to make good pictures when cockpit be over, to see all the details of this wonderful cockpit. I had no intention of comparing the current image, and some future. ;)

OK Sall, no problem but don't forget that once the half fuselage will be glued together, the cockpit will be very tiny... ;)
-
Yes and through open cockpit could be seen instrument board and seat. This is why I am fan of the Eduard Zoom set, there is just enough items to upgrade your kit, upgrade going swift and result is great!
-
I agree with you mate, for aircrafts with tiny cockpits, PE zoom is perfect!
Anyway, I've continued the work, being at home today...
First, the instrument panels. So many little PE parts to glue... But what a great result! Stunning!!! I have placed a drop of Tamiya clear varnish on each instrument to simulate glasses.
Then I have finished weathering of some parts of the cockpit, with a drybrush of Citadel Colors "Mithril Silver" where the pilot place his feets; and I have used an aequous pencil (Caran d'Ache "Chestnut brown") better than to make an oil wash - That evitates to use matt varnish/clear varnish on the colored PE parts, and it's an appreciable spare of time.
Instruments of the consoles were painted in black and drybrushed in Mithril Silver.
Next time: seatbelts...
-
Great! ;)
-
Final results are great!!!
-
Thank you! ;)
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you Scott!
Well, cockpit is finished! It's really a kit into the kit, and I'm proud of the result I've obtained.
First two photos are made by my 13 years old daughter Mathilde; she's very good to take photos...
Then I've worked on the tail wheel, using PE parts from the "Exterior" set from Eduard. Asked some attention...
And finally the fuselage is closed...
My German seller told me that he sent me the machineguns today; so I hope to receive that set in the beginning of next week. That will give me time to work on the engine on the meantime ;)
-
Excellent progress mate :-ok Hope that Mathilde would not start make plastic kits, otherwise you will not have photographer any more :))
-
Excellent progress mate :-ok Hope that Mathilde would not start make plastic kits, otherwise you will not have photographer any more :))
Thank you!
Wel, Mathilde made excellent model kits two years ago, she won numerous contests in junior category with her "Da Vinci Tortoise" from RetrokiT; and her " Ladybug" and "Ant" (Formica Rufa) from Heller. But since last year, she don't be interrested anymore actually...
-
If she decide to return, our forum is open for her ;)
-
Sure ;)
-
I would like to see her, here, on the forum! :)
About cockpit... As you say, kit in the kit! Beautiful! :-clap :-clap
-
Well, for Mathilde, decision to come back in the hobby is her...
Yesterday I've just prepared the parts of the engine.
And today, I've received the Aires machineguns!!!
-
This build will be excellent. :-clap So much PE parts and resin.
Like Srecko's Su-27 1/72. :-tri
-
Oh no, he will done better! Go on mate :-ok
-
Oh no, he will done better! Go on mate :-ok
Thank you Sall and Srecko, but I'm not sure that I will do better. I'm not considering myself as a "top modeler"; I'm just an average one...
-

Thank you Sall and Srecko, but I'm not sure that I will do better. I'm not considering myself as a "top modeler"; I'm just an average one...
Hahaha.. You are great joker! :-joke
-
Well, as the machineguns arrived today I decided to give a try to the gun bays.
... The PE sheet proposed by Eduard is another "kit in the kit"!!! That will give a splendid effect when finished.
First of all, the forming of the bay and glueing of a myriad of small parts...
Then, using the template provided on the PE set, I removed some plastic matter.
Finally, I introduced the bay into the wing.
OK, I have to do some sanding on the lower part of the wing but actually fitting is already good.
That little object have taken me 3 hours of work... And there is a second wing! :-dal
Actually I'm not decided to do or not the second gun bay. Not for "too much hard work" reason; it's just a question of patience - But because I'm wondering if the two gun bays open, that will not be too symetrical... What I want to say is: on the left wing you have the cockade. On the right wing the open gun bay. Good enough or not? Do I have to open the second gun bay and opt for a more symetric build? Your opinion will be helpful... :)) :-ok
-
Smart decision, open only one bay is just enough
-
Smart decision, open only one bay is just enough
Well, I think so... But I was really hesitating...
-
Is this images of any help?
-
Ooooh yes, absolutely!!! Thank you very much!!!
For the colors of th egun bays, I suppose it was zinc chromate?
-
Both bays, both bays! :)) :-tri
-
In general this is yellow interior protective color but will take a look on all images I have and try to see it. I am very glad you like it :))
-
I, personally, would opt for one open bay as you had mentioned. This would draw the eye of the observer to the right side of the machine and balance the national insignia on the left. On the other hand, you could fold the left wing and have the right one with gun bay opened..... regardless, this is a very nice thread to watch.
I'll also look into the gun bay color. If memory serves, earlier Hellcats had the yellow tinted primer and later production used green, but I'm not certain enough to say for sure.
-

This is it, later was green but need check out, images will come soon ;) I hope...
-
Thank you mates, and thank you for the help for the bay color.
Sall, sorry mate, I will open one bay only... ;)
-
As well I have mostly black and white images it is hard to give any opinion of the color. Even color image of the burning machine does not show much as well it is burned. I did not search Internet... few others images show engine details as well one of the optional machine to be built, flown by ace :))
-
No problem mate, one is more than enough. :-ok
-
I don't think there is a definite reference that can nail down the colors inside the Hellcat. There has been a lot of discussion about the interior of the cowling, for instance. I just found this link that has much of the interesting conversation. http://s362974870.onlinehome.us/forums/air/index.php?showtopic=149739
My guess is that the later the airplane was built the more interior green one would see. A friend of mine had a wing from an F6F-5 and it was green in the bay, but this had come off of a 1970s "warbird" restoration so I wouldn't use it as a good example.
-
Thank you all for all those infos. I think I will airbrush same way than for the cockpit...
-
Not many time for modelling today... I've just prepared the PE parts for the ammo boxes, and opened the ejection traps...
-
This is also a lot of work!
-
This is also a lot of work!
One full hour indeed...
-
This is good mate for that small details
-
Good. :-ok
-
Today, not many time again and I worked on another model. Just taken the time to glue three little PE parts... :-red
-
What glue you use? :-think
Tiny parts,great job! ;)
-
What glue you use? :-think
Tiny parts,great job! ;)
I'm using Bison cyano glue; little drops placed with a toothpick...
The parts are effectively very tiny, and as today my hands was a little bit shaking, I preferred to work on some painting on the Albatros D.XI...
-
Bison cyano glue- can this be found in Serbia? :-think
-
Any good cyano will work, mate
-
Bison is available in Serbia :)
-
Do you know where i can find it Srecko? :-think
-
Every store with paint material :)) Craftsman stores and so on...
-
Good progress today. I made holes in the guns, glued the wings, and assembled the wings with the fuselage.
I've used mr Surfacer as a security.
I'm really impressed by the excellent quality of that kit...
-
And great how fast it could be made ;)
-
Yes, great. But great is also gun bay! :-tri :-jump It look so beautiful in open position:-tri
-
Well, this evening I've put a little bit of Vallejo putty around the gun bay... Looks better...
-
The last parts that will be used are removed from sprue. I have scratchbuilded a part; the one Eduard is providing in photoetch being too flat.
I've also tried to use the template proposed by Eduard for the wheel bays, but the result I've obtained was not satisfying enough; so I slightly modified the plastic parts.
The machineguns are ready; I Have not used all the PE elements. I can use little PE parts, but some here needed a microscope to be manipulated. Too much for me... :-eek :-dal
I know my limits!!! :-green :-green :-green :-help
-
Great job. ;)
-
Done great mate ;)
-
Thank you!
Once again, I've great fun with that kit!!!
-
Mr Surfacer is sanded. You can also see on the first photo the Vallejo putty around the gun bay.
During the process on sanding, I've brokem a little element (and lost the broken part :-kr )...
... But here I've used a technique that AFV modelers are using frequently: the acrylic 3D paint for tissue. With a toothpick I applied the color where the part was missing... Now, just to let dry a little bit ;)
-
Great job Daniel. ;) Hardly wait to see painted gun bay. ;)
-
Thank you!
-
Enjoyable to watch your progress!
-
True, pleasure built :)
-
Thank you mates!
Unfortunately, little break in the build for three days (some 1/1 scale works at home...)
-
Enjoy in brake :))
-
Well, enjoy...
No choice mate, I'm married ;)
-
:-smey :-smey :-smey :-ok
-
Resuming the work:
Some Photoetched parts are placed; elements that were sanded are replaced by photoetch + 3D acrylic paint; a little bit of putty is applied.
-
What a nice details mate ;)
-
Thank you mate! ;)
-
This is so great build!! :-clap :-clap Can't wait to see finished gun bays and the whole plane. :-jump
-
What a jewel!
-
Thank you mates!
Well, have had good time airbrushing the primer. Before that I did not forget to sand the cowler... ;)
The primer revealed little jointure visible after the antenna, and a "sprue-attach location" on an aileron that was imperfectly sanded. I corrected with cyano for the jointure; sanding; and new airbrushing.
In the process I broke the filter under the fuselage :-red :-wall :-help but reparation took me less than one minute :-tri
-
Good! Look good! :-ok
I'm glad that now it is everything ok with filter! ;)
-
Well, filter is once again dropped... And once again glued! Too delicate element; but so nice in open position...
Today I sprayed aluminum paint overall. I will use maskol + sponge for weathering, then spray the final paint.
-
Yes :-tri
-
:-love It look so nice with this aluminium paint!! :-clap :-clap
-
:-love It look so nice with this aluminium paint!! :-clap :-clap
I find so that too... But I'm impatient to see the blue gloss paint ;)
-
Maskol was applied with sponge. Very interresting and easy to use technique for weathering... ;)
Of course, applied on all parts...
-
This will be great!! :-clap :-clap
-
How do you clean Maskol from sponge? Or you simply drop it after use?
-
How do you clean Maskol from sponge? Or you simply drop it after use?
I cut the sponge in little parts, and yes, I drop those parts after use...
Eventually it's possible to cut with scissors the surface that haves maskol, if your part is not too tight...
-
Masking tape around the gun bay (of course, the maskol that I've put there will be removed with the tape so I will have to put maskol again, but it's not a problem...) and behind the engine...
Next phase will be the painting of the gun bay; then masking the gun bay and then painting the aircraft...
-
Cool! :-ok
-
Is it necessary? I guess that you can free hand spray and then put access panel over it and paint with camouflage color. Or not? Anyway very precise masking work :-clap
-
Not really necessary no, but... Well, I find better that no green goes under the blue gloss...
-
All right mate :)
-
...And here is the result.
Maskol did not removed with the tape :)) :-think
Next step: to mask the gun bay and... To paint!
-
Use fingers in this way, make something like 'massage' on area under Maskol
-
Use fingers in this way, make something like 'massage' on area under Maskol
Yes, or Q-tip is good also. In fact, I'm happy maskol was not removed, because masking would have to be made before to use maskol...
-
The more i looking at this plane, the more i like it!!! :-clap Gun bay look great! At the end of this build, please take some closer shots of gun bay. Just to see all details! :-tri
-
The more i looking at this plane, the more i like it!!! :-clap Gun bay look great! At the end of this build, please take some closer shots of gun bay. Just to see all details! :-tri
Thank you Sall; and sure I will take photos as closest as possible. I have to work on the machineguns; there are painted in silver and I will apply oil paint "black smoke" on them, then remove the oil paint with Q-tip. That technique gives to the weapon a realistic look... ;)
-
Believe me, hardly wait to see that!! :-jump
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Gun bay masked; maskol removed (for the gun bay only)
I have also airbrusehd white on the propeller bosse, and red at the emplacement of the "mouth"...
-
:-ok
-
Thank you Sall!!!
Well, serious things now: Gunze H54 airbrushed.
-
Looking good :-ok How do you keep you work mat so clean? or is that oine just for photos? :-think I can never keep mine clean :-wall :))
Won't be long now and we can see how the chipping comes out :-jump If it is the same as your Fokker, it will be awesome!
Ernie
-

Ernie
Thank you Ernie!
Well, to keep my work mat clean, I put on it a simple sheet of paper... That I remove when I take some photos ;)
I hope also that chipping will be nice. Will try that tomorrow.
-
I agree with Ernie. :-flo
-
Ah! so simple, a sheet of paper :)) :-ok Ok, now I feel like a dummy for not think of that :)) :)) :)) :))
Ernie
-
Excellent work mate :-ok Interesting is that my work mat is very exhausted and I could worn first prize in contest for 'worst work mat' :-smey
-
:)) :)) :))
-
As the paint was dry enough, I don't waited until tomorrow and removed the maskol today.
Better to use maskol (from Humbrol) than neo (from Gunze) because the last one is harder to remove (better adherence; in such a case it's not an advantage)
OK, it's a new technique for me; I'm really happy with that but I think experience will permit a better use :))
-
Thanks for info, so care when purchase any of this masking liquids ;)
-
Result is EXCELLENT!! I really like it! So real! Also, gun bay is excellent,as i can see it from this pics. ;) Go forward mate, you are doing great job! :-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Very nice! I like techniques such as this because of the "randomness" of the chipping, sometimes when applying the chips by brush or a silver pencil you can sort of fall into a pattern that is not so random. Hope that made some sense?
Ernie
-
It might be nice to add this paint-chipping method to Sall's "Some modeling techiques" sticky thread!
-
Thank you mates!
Scott: yes, good idea. Will check my photos and do that as soon as possible...
-
Yes guys. It would be nice! ;) :-flo
-
Painting of the ammo bands; position lights, exhausts, other lights and tyres...
-
Nice work mate :-ok
-
Thank you mate!
Now, some masking needed (rockets, propeller bosse) and soon I will begin the engine!!!
-
Very nice detailes!!! :-clap :-ok
-
Thank you Sall!
Today, work on different elements:
First, the engine: I've airbrushed Vallejo Oily Steel with a drop of black. Then followed a very strongly diluted spray of Oily Steel with Old Gold. Next phase will be the use of Citadel Colors brown ink.
Airbrush cleaning...
I've airbrusehd yellow on the propeller.
Airbrush cleaning...
I've airbrushed grey on the engine
Airbrush cleaning...
I've partially airbrushed (another kind of) grey on the rockets. I've to airbrush the heads next time
Airbrush cleaning...
...And enough for today :))
-
Nice work there mate :-ok
-
Nice, lots of airbrush cleaning :-wall
Ernie
-
Very nice! :-ok
-
excelent progress,
looks great...
cheers
-
Realy like the detailing! Great work!
Primož
-
Thank you! :)
Second part of grey airbrushing on the rockets; painting of the propeller and Ciradel Colors brown ink on the engine, with a little bit of black...
-
Nice bent wires for engine :-clap
-
:-ok
-
Thank you mates!
-
Masks on the propeller are removed; maskol also removed with a Q-tip...
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Nice effect!!!
-
Thank you mates! :-salut
I've continued this afternoon, finishing the engine and gluing it on place. Then I've placed the cover...
Some problem with the rockets: the paint was damaged by my little pliers. Nothing dramatic, but I had to repaint the rockets and they have to dry before I use masking tape... I definitively don't like gloss paints :-think
The machineguns are finished also: the alu paint was generously covered with oil paint "black smoke". After 1/4h, the oil paint was gently removed with (lots of) Q-tips.
I've used turpentine to wash my two paintbrush used for the oil; it's an odor I don't support :-help - even with an open window (remember, cold weather actually...) so I finished the work for today...
-
Nice work but work with open window in December is not favorable thing :(
-
Nice work but work with open window in December is not favorable thing :(
Exactly... That's why I stopped ;)
-
Painting with gloss paints isn't much fun. I was spraying gloss sea blue this morning in my garage and it was -1C. It started alright but then I ended up with some fisheyes when the surface of the model got colder. Spraying some flat Humbrol was no problem at that temperature, though! :-tri
Keep up the great updates!
-
Great work my friend!! :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you mates! :)
-
So many time spent for masking six rockets only...
-
Huh.... this what you do is a reason why many people do not use armament store in their kits
-
Huuuuuugeeeeee masking work!!!! :-eek :-eek
-
I agree with both of you, Srecko and Sall!!!
I've airbrushed the blue gloss and the alu...
-
Yes, I usually leave the bombs, rockets, and missiles in the spares box. You're really going all-out on these!
-
I wonder why so many modellers don't use the ordnance with the models?
-
You are my man Daniel. I always put almost all armament on plane. I love when it looks dangerous! :)) :-clap :-clap
-
On certain models, weapons are worth adding, i.e. Ju87, Beaufighter, P-47, A-1, A-6, MiG-23 etc. On others, they detract from graceful lines, Yak-1, Spitfire, F-86 amongst many.
-
In my case it's pure laziness, I admit. :-red However, I am starting to add a little ordnance with the positive influence of LLL builders.
-
Good to hear that Scott! ;) :-flo
-
In my case it's pure laziness, I admit. :-red However, I am starting to add a little ordnance with the positive influence of LLL builders.
Me too :(
-
Interresting comments - and thanks, all of you.
I prefer also an aircraft without ordnance, for the purity of the lines. At least for WWII - Modern aircrafts sounds a little bit "naked" without ordnance... ;)
-
Masks are removed from rockets. Of course, some corrections were needed to the paint; so I wil let dry that glossy paint and wait until next time before to airbrush clear varnish
-
Wonderful :-ok
-
Thanks, mate!
-
Rockets look excellent!!! I like work on them, like on this whole plane!! :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you mate!
-
Pébéo clear varnish applied.
Next step: decals...
-
And we are close to final display kit :)
-
And we are close to final display kit :)
I hope so, but it remains some work to do with oil wash...
-
:-tri :-tri :-clap :-clap Excellent mate!!!
-
Thank you Sall!!!
Decals are applied with the use of MicroSet & MicroSol. Next phase (probably on monday) will be clear varnish again, then oil wash...
-
Fantastic work mate :-clap
-
Thank you :)
-
Excellent! I love those markings :-clap , I would like to build a Hellcat in those markings someday.
Ernie
-
Thank you Ernie!
IMHO it's the most appealing deco of the box - Others are great, but this one is simply the best!
-
Beautiful!! :-love :-clap
-
Thank you! ;)
-
Excellent!
-
Thank you Scott! :)
-
Before to airbrush clear varnish, I had to do some things I've forgotten...
First, I completely forgot to place the decals on the propeller!!! Not a big mistake of course, but I'm glad to have seen that before to continue the work...
Then, with a razor blade, I've cut the decals of the eyes and the mouth to follow the lines of the cowler...
Razor blade... :-dal Rapid check: five to left hand, five to right hand... Okay, my fingers are all present! :))
-
:-ok
-
Decals set up perfectly :-clap
-
Thank you!!! ;)
-
Two days ago, I've airbrushed Pébéo clear varnish on the aircraft. And yesterday I've begun the oil wash. The wings and ailerons are finished; today I hope to make the fuselage and little parts...
-
Almost complete :))
-
:-jump
-
Yes... I just hope to have some time for modeling today; my grandson is at home and I'm baby sitter this morning...
...Too dangerous for my kits to go to the workbench with the kid ;)
-
OK, I had two hours of free time and so, I finished the oil wash on the aircraft.
I have also finished the ammo box on the right wing...
-
Nice. :-ok
-
I see here Winner Model on any competition!
-
:-red Thank you
-
I've airbrushed Pébéo matt varnish. Once again, Pébéo varnishes are IMHO the best ones! :-love
I have also removed the masks.
Some details to fix before final assembly... But, really, what a great kit!!!
-
Only best words for Pebeo :-ok And your work is top!!!
-
Thank you! ;)
-
You are close to finish line. :-tri
-
The finish line... ;)
Today I've first used Tamiya pastels for the smoke fumes: black for the guns; and for the exhausts I first used black then what Tamiya names "Rust" and that is in fact a nice brown. The brown is very useful; he avoids the black to be too dark and too "hard". And gives a more realistic result...
After that I painted clear varnish on the position lights; then glued the rockets (simply with a drop of clear varnish!); the wheels; the canopy (mobile part); the propeller and finally the mobile panels of the ammo box.
My daughter Mathilde helped me grandly giving me one of her beautiful very dark hair, that served for the antenna...
... And yes, it's finished now!!!
Well. I LOVE it. Eduard realised a fabulous kit, easy to assemble, fun to build. I'm really impatient to see their release of the 1/72 FAA Hellcat; that will be another great moment.
Of course, an article will follow soon :))

Last photos...

Hi,
Excellent rendering at the end of an amazing work.
Only one detail : on many cases (look at the photos) very hot fumes rendered the Dark Sea Blue with white stains.
Cheers,
Jicehem :-wave
-
Beautiful little Hellcat, Draken! :-ok :-love :-jump :-cool :-tri
-
Thank you all!
Jicéhem, thanks for the tip, I will take it into account when I will build the FAA version...
