Here is historic background of this build. The first image is a shot of Charles A. Lindbergh posing with VMF-115 skipper, Joe Foss on Emirau Island in October 1944. The other two shots are of Lindbergh at the controls of F4U-1A 49845. At that time that Corsair was assigned to Roi-Namur, Kwajelein. I don't have the exact date of the 'air' shot but it was late Summer 1944 and the ground view was taken on 2SEP44. That Corsair was assigned to VMF-224 (confirmed by the aircraft history card) and carried the three digit numbers in the location on the nose uniquely used only by VMF-224. On ground image can be noted medium blue paint on fuselage side, while in flight photo (source of my build), show it over painted. It is interesting manner, seen on several different Corsairs, that side medium blue was painted over.
