Ah yes...... our stores stock "white" and "cider" vinegar. I'll give it a try!

I dabbed on some of the white vinegar and the decal is reacting exactly as it would have with Microsol. I realized when I opened the vinegar bottle that it even smells pretty similar. :-think

Thanks, No.1, for the tip!

More progress. I used BareMetal foil to trim the inlet openings, sprayed Metalizer on the aft fuselage ring and refueling receptacle. Then a start on the decals.

I thought that I'd researched the airplane and decals pretty thoroughly, but I just found that I haven't got the correct Tactical Air Command badges for either side of the vertical. The 49th FIS became part of TAC during one of the reshufflings of USAF commands and the older style badges on my sheet are the wrong ones. It'll take some digging in unbuilt models to find what I'm needing, I suppose.......

There is still a LOT left to do on this one. I haven't even started on the main landing gear or the missiles.

The crew chief of '074 showed me some really nice air-to-air photos the other day. One of them is of a four-ship echelon and two of the airplanes my friend worked on are in the flight. It turns out that the photos were taken by Keith Ferris when he was researching an F-106 painting.

I was searching for unrelated treasure in the shop yesterday and found my first F-106 that I built just after the kit was first released. I'm going to inventory it for missing parts, and if everything is there I'm going to rebuild it as a QF-106 drone. It should be fun!
