The owner wanted a simple base, so we found a block of aluminum and buffed it, then used a long drill bit for the attaching post. He actually provided the shoulder patch from his USAF momentos.

Great job on both!  I had to start the thread from the beginning, I didn't realize you had built two of them.  Did either of the recipients know that they were getting the models or see pictures of them before the hand over?  The element of surprise is a great thing!  I've found that I get attached to them while building though and it's hard to give them away when the time comes.

Yep both models were known by the owner, who happens to be the same guy! He wanted an "in-flight" of 083 which was his final 106 before he left the Air Force. The 49th retired the Darts not too long after he departed.

I don't get too attached to the models if I know they're being built on commission or for a friend. I reckon that comes from the models I've built on commission during my stock car building days. I did build a B-17 for a good friend, and customer of mine, years ago that I didn't want to part with until I saw his face the day he got it. He and I had visited about WWII and he mentioned that he was a Fortress pilot. I worked with his daughter to get some pictures he had and I built his airplane. Presenting it to him was a total surprise to him and it was a great experience.

I handed over the F-106 today to it's new owner. I also let slip the fact that a two-seat F-106B conversion can be accomplished and I may have to build one of those for him, also. Seems that he was assigned to a two-seater at one time.....

Yes, he's very happy with the new one. He also brought the first one back to me for some repair work today after he let a friend break some small parts off. Not a big job but I reckon it could be called "warranty work"!

No need to start a new thread for this one, as I mentioned it at the start of this story........

Here's the old F-106 I built in the early eighties just after Monogram introduced it. It's been sitting in my "to do" box for rebuilding quite a long time and yesterday evening the reconstruction started--with disassembly!

It took a little extra time searching for some of the small parts that had gotten separated from the main airframe. I'm still lacking a couple of landing gear struts but I might source them from the SAC landing gear set I have.

After disassembly it was time for paint stripping, and this was HARD work compared to most. The ADC grey really required much work and several coats of oven cleaner before it came free:

After lots of stripping and scraping the parts went back together and filler could be applied once again:

I'm quickly running out of these old builds--only one F-101B and the P-61 still in the queue.
