The kit is both simple and well-designed with regard to the interior sections. The cockpit looks like it could use more detail at first glance, but the 1/1 version wasn't too "busy" either. The moldmakers even did a pretty good job of hiding the ejector pin marks or made them easy to repair.

One item I wish they had made an option is closed speedbrakes. The kit provides both brakes molded to the hinge point--it makes for simple assembly but more work if you wish to close them.

Thanks, Letipapa! I actually do have those images but I'm quite glad you posted them for the crew. My friend, Mike, was crew chief on '074 at the time of the flyby pictures and has a large original print of that four-ship hanging at his home.

'074 was delivered from Convair to the 438th FIS in 1960 and then she went on to the 49th inventory in 1968. The 438th moved from Kincheloe to Griffiss AFB just before the change of designation and she stayed at Griffiss until retirement.

The cockpit is nearing the stage when I can assemble it to be set aside for later installation into the upper fuselage half. On this model the instrument panel is attached to the fuselage opening and the cockpit tub is glued in afterward.

I do too. I used the "paint and scrape" method on many of the buttons and gauges of this one since the detail has lots of relief. For those who haven't tried it, simply spray the panels white, let it dry, then spray it again with black. The final step is to carefully scrape or sand the black off of the raised buttons and instruments and the white will start to show. Some red for guarded switches and yellow where needed. The final step is to drop a tiny bit of clear gloss into the guage faces to simulate the lenses. On this panel there are two large screens for the radar and forward scanner and I simply painted the blank screens in gloss black. It wouldn't fly at the competition level, but for this model it will suffice.

The cockpit is now assembled and installed in the top fuselage half. Before I put the cockpit and instrument panel in place I filled/smoothed the seam on the spine of the fuselage and painted the black area under the windscreen.

 I also added the wheelwell bulkheads this morning and started to do a bit of detail painting in the gear wells.

I got up this morning to a rainy, grey, cold day--a perfect excuse for model building. After brewing coffee I installed the wheelwell bulkheads in the fuselage and assembled the two wing halves together.

Once that was cured I turned it over and added the "engine" barrel to the aft fuselage. The final step was to install the nose gear and wheelwell bulkheads into the forward end.

I need to do a bit of filling/sanding on the wing leading edges and then it'll be time to join the upper and lower halves of the fuselage.
