Not bad for a model from 1964, although this one is the 2005 boxing. My only issue, and its a slight one, is the annoying habit of Monogram embossing their logo on the kit. However, a wee swipe with a sanding stick is all it takes :)

I wish I still had their Devastator in 1:48, it was a superb kit :( Mind you, no reason why I can't get one. I have their P-40B in 1:48, which is still a nice model. I'd like their P-47D 'Razorback' if I can find one, although the Otaki one is good as well. Not all Monogram kits were as good, but, in general, they were 'state of the art' when released, and must have made many modellers happy. I think I built their 1:48 Wildcat, which had folding wings? It met with a sad end, involving the family bible which fell on it.

Devastator is interesting, did somebody else build this kit or only Monogram?

There's a new one coming out in 1:48 by Great Wall Hobbies, and in 1:72 you have the Airfix and Valom examples. White Ensign offer 1:72 etched-brass interior and exterior parts, plus Falcon do clear-vax canopies too.

I have the photo-etch in 1:72, plus vacform canopy. It does make the old Airfix kit look really nice, although the cowling needs a bit of thinning out.

It's sad that the Devastator is mostly remembered for the terrible losses at Midway, but it did well at the Battle of the Coral Sea. The biggest handicap was the dreadfully unreliable Bliss-Leavitt Mk.12 Torpedo. It was a very advanced aircraft upon entering service. Think of the FAA Swordfish, antiquated and a death-trap for it's crew if enemy fighters were about, yet forever lauded as a great naval aircraft. I find it terrible that the FAA couldn't equip these brave aircrew with something better :(

I'm going to eventually restore a Monogram TBD that I have. :-blah :-blah :-blah

Still looking for my references on the F-5.......
