De Havilland DH 88 Comet Racer
« on: January 16, 2012, 11:11:11 PM »
Hi everybody,  :-salut :-salut

Here is surely a "Museum kit" from Airfix. This kit was issued for the first time in... 1957 ! It was continually on the shelves from 1957 to 1976, then from 1998 to 2002 and finally from 2010 to today...
Mine has been built in 1977 for my daughter who wanted to get a red airplane.
You see just below the illustration from 1976 (To be noted is the price at 4,20 FF equivalent of today 2,30 Euros. The kit is sold this year at the price of £ 5.39 in GB (about 6,80 Euros...) :

Now, the kit which hast lost the propeller blades. The decals have yellowed...

The reissue of 2010 with a new illustration indicating a change for this kit, but as you will see this is the only improvement :

Look at the pilots : a typical representation of the 1950s :

Cheers,
Jicéhem  :-wave :-wave

No, not in the next future. My daughter (now aged 41) doesn't want to keep her kit. It's the reason why it's at home...
I've too many kits to finish and I work so slowly. Tuesday, if the weather permits (sun !) I'll take pictures of my complete F-100A but still without markings.

That is such a cool looking airplane. I've always wanted to do one of those, but give it markings like it was from the computer game "Crimson Skies". Make it sort of a "pirate fighter plane" like the game had.

Comet racer had interesting scheme when R.A.F. evaluated this machine in 1936 at Martlesham Heath!

De Havilland designed some of the nicest shaped airplanes, didn't they!? Like many of the Italian designs this looks fast just sitting on the ground.

I fully agree De Havillland built some very nice looking machines!
This is another example: the DH-91 Albatros.
About time that a nice model kit of this type will be released; would be a good effort for Airfix!!

I was thinking of the DH-91 when I was typing my post, Nico. That was just a brillaint design in my opinion. I wonder sometimes if the designers at Lockheed didn't use the Albatros as their starting point when the Constellation was designed.
