Title: A7 E Corsair II
Post by: modellius on December 20, 2013, 01:38:36 AM
Well, what can I say, I don't have enough started projects on my work-bench so I had to start another one  :-wall

It's a Hasegawa model, scale 1/48 very nicely detailed, look like it will be fun to build it, but first let we see what we can find in the box ( I bought the model second-hand on some modeling event so some of the parts were already taken of the frame but they are all there ) :

And the work continued..... Aires way to replace the kits part is not a good idea, I think it can't be done on that way and to look as it should, so I had to remove almost half of the kit and rebuild it from styrene and use the aires replacement parts as the starting point. Of course lots of details lost....

The intake is complicated as much as possible, it has two halves, longitudinally, lots of putty and sanding on a very inaccessible place, not to mention the bad connection of the intake with the fuselage. Here the only upgrade I made is the cutting of the hasegawas inake end and made a new one from styrene and some p.e leftover to simulate the first row of the blades of the engine, becouse of the size of the intake it will be visible

After endless hours of putty and sanding, and to be honest after a longer brake I continued the work on my A7.... With the fuselage nearly finished I started to work on landing gears. While the wheel wells are nearly perfect, no update, or to be precise, there is some but it's nearly not worth even to mention it, so I had to do some scratch. Here is the beginning.

And finally, the last detail to complete the seat arrived

(http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv347/modellius_senta/A7%20E/th_070520145010_zpsa1f9d351.jpg) (http://s698.photobucket.com/user/modellius_senta/media/A7%20E/070520145010_zpsa1f9d351.jpg.html)

more about it you can read here

http://www.letletlet-warplanes.com/forum/makete-aviona-aircraft-modeling/remove-before-flight/

The work continued, I put together the wing section with the fuselage, disaster, lots of putty and sanding will be needed......Again....

(http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv347/modellius_senta/A7%20E/th_040520144999_zps7d1c9343.jpg) (http://s698.photobucket.com/user/modellius_senta/media/A7%20E/040520144999_zps7d1c9343.jpg.html) (http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv347/modellius_senta/A7%20E/th_040520144996_zpsde1f1694.jpg) (http://s698.photobucket.com/user/modellius_senta/media/A7%20E/040520144996_zpsde1f1694.jpg.html) (http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv347/modellius_senta/A7%20E/th_040520144997_zpsf88d854a.jpg) (http://s698.photobucket.com/user/modellius_senta/media/A7%20E/040520144997_zpsf88d854a.jpg.html)

And just for the fun of it, I cut out all the moving surfaces on the wing section.....

(http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv347/modellius_senta/A7%20E/th_040520145000_zps271f5e7c.jpg) (http://s698.photobucket.com/user/modellius_senta/media/A7%20E/040520145000_zps271f5e7c.jpg.html)

To relax, I continued to work on the wheel bays, some more hydraulic tubes added, all the connection are soldered, first I made the proper shape and then installed it in the weel bays

After endless hours of putty and sanding, trying to get the airspeed brake to the correct shape and fitting to the fuselage I got enough and put the model to " cool down " a bit....Well it was a long period of time but ten days ago I started again, and again it didn't work properly, so I took of the already glued airspeed brake from the fuselage and I will made it in a slightly open position, about 3 - 5 degrees. Yes, I'm aware of the fact that it almost never happened to look like this, but I just don't have the nerves for this anymore.....

And the seat. The base is the seat from the Aires cockpit set, with a bit homemade tuning, the biggest challenge was to  replace and combine the flat photo-etched parts with the brass wire to get it look like it should. And of course, the joining of the parts is soldered....

The instrument panel, to make a used worn out look instead of black I used Revell No9 ( anthrazit grey ). For glass Humbrol Clear Fix was used. The slightly visible Clear Fix traces were removed after complete drying.

it's pretty much the same, the final look is perhaps better, due the original part was from two halves so much sanding and putty would be needed on hard to reach places, if I think it better maybe this was even faster.......

well, the paint job started, I wish to make a worn out well used bird ( what a surprise  :-wise ) so no decals will be used only stenciles, so the first phase is the blue/yellow stripe on the fuselage and the blue area on the tail. All is painted post-shade technique

The painted has started; first gunze white primer then the white areas with post-shading. This time I tried out a new paneling method; first I painted the white, then grey over panel lines and then I draw the panels with 2B pencil and then " killed " the shade with white. I'm satisfied with the result

Pencil :)) When I was subscribed on Verlinden magazine in 1991, that was my first method of highlight details (as well dry powders). And with entire avalanche of many products available in meantime, this cheap materials stay almost the best for that purpose.

Looks excellent! I'm going to practice your pencil method on the Me 410, I think.

Note: Use 0.5 mm 2B pencil and always sharpen the pin on sandpaper one sided so you can draw a nice thin line

Of course the trouble goes on, the inside of the conopy didn't fit to the clear part of the conopy so once again it had to be done by home intervention with a help of evergreen styrene

When I was searching for photos of electronic bays I found it out tat most modelers simply paint the most of it and called it a day, it's not that simple ( never is, right ? ) after hours of searching I found it out why, it's a bit complicated to find good pictures of these areas. Never the less finally I founded what I wanted so electronic bays are painted by photos I founded.

And after hours and hours of painting, reparing the damages, painting again and all over again going in circles, lots of cofee, beer and nerves finally painted, only few decals were used ( USS Forestal, number below NAVY and stenciles ) and this is how it looks now

The final look of the cockpit, somehow the HUD glass was lost during the process so I will have to make a new one, only the seat remains to be placed. Maybe a bit of dry-brush later on to highlight some details, time will tell
