VL Pyry
Pyry was designed in Finland as fighter trainer. Its first flight was in March 1939. Series of 40 aircraft was ordered and these were delivered in 1941. This first model had a tip stalling tendency and longitudinal instability. In 1944 appeared modified model, with different wings and extended fuselage, which gave satisfactory flying quality. Pyry served as long as 25 years. Photographs present VL Pyry with elliptical wings preserved in Finish museum.

The Finnish Aviation Museum (http://ilmailumuseo.fi/en/) is a lovely little museum, I visited one day when I had a few hours to spare at Helsinki-Vantaa airport. It’s about a 2km walk from the terminals. It has a diverse selection of interesting civil and military aircraft, about half of Finnish origin. For glider pilots it’s particularly worthwhile, as they have a collection of Finnish PIK gliders, including the prototypes of the PIK-20 and what became the PIK-20E, as well as a variety of vintage gliders from around the world that had belonged to Finnish glider clubs. Well worth the walk…
