Mil Mi-24 Hind Osprey Vanguard 171
One of the most significant gunship helicopters of the cold war era was by far most Soviet built Mil Mi-24. As a combination gunship and troop transport, the Mi-24 has no direct NATO counterpart The true combat experience this helicopter had during the Afghan conflict, where it earned it’s nickname The Satan chariot. In one case, a Mi-24 pilot who was out of ammunition managed to rescue a company of infantry by maneuvering aggressively towards Mujahideen guerrillas and scaring them off. The Mi-24 was popular with ground troops.
Alexander Mladenov’s book is published by Osprey publishing in their known Vanguard series on 48 pages paperback. Book is divided in five chapters and it covers the basic information about this significant bird. Author takes the reader through the basic development of the helicopter then followed through three major variants of this machine. However since Mi-24 is been used for quiet long period of time, one chapter has covered all the major upgrades and upgrade proposals that are taken so far. Fifth chapter covers Hinds in action, or usage of Mi-24 trough the world.
Vanguard series is a nice publication by Osprey that covers some basic information about the subject, provide nice photo documentation and few illustrations. According to me this book is very nice, and well written. Book can be purchased here!
This book is highly recommended.
